International 244 -- Glow Plug System Problems

NEED HELP PLEASE --
I recently purchased an International 244 Diesel Tractor. The Glow Plug System is not working and will not start without starting fluid.
I purchased and installed new glow plugs and still cannot get the system to work. The wiring looks to have been Modified / Jimmy-Rigged) and so I am having great difficulty trying trace / verify the wiring.
Today when I was attempting to get the system working, I turned the key to the "Heat" position and the Resistor/Indicator immediately turned bright red and could smell some wires burning. The Resistor/Indicator wire burned in two. The Glow Plugs appear to still be ok. The Glow Plugs appear to be 10.5 Volts.
Does anyone know if I can by-pass the Factory Glow Plug System using the Key Switch...and Use some type of a Push Button type setup? I have read about some people have replaced the Glow Plugs with 12 Volt plugs and using a Push Button wired direct from battery. (BATTERY -to- BUTTON -to- GLOW PLUGS)
The wiring on the tractor seems to have been Modified / Jimmy Rigged making it very difficult for me to trace/follow.

Thank you.

Hi, is it really an IH 2444? If glow plug resistor on the dash lights up instantly then your glow plugs are either wired wrong or there is. a short
between resistor and first glow plug by the battery box. The glow plugs are supposed to be wired in series. It sounds like somehow they are
wired in parrallel. The solid wires should be separated by an insulator on each glow plug. The wire from dash resistor should go to outside of
first glow plug next to battery box, then there should be an insulator then sold wire closest to engine that goes to next glow plug next to engine
then an insulator then solid wire to next glow plug and the wiring pattern is repeated. Do Not put 12V on the glow plug or they will burn out
instantly. When everything is connected properly there should be about 6V to ground at the wire that connects to first glow plug from the dash
resistor.

There is a kit that can be purchased to replace the old glow plug with new 12V ones from Mercedez. Tomorrow evening I will post link to
archives with the new setup.

Thank you for your input Jim. I would greatly appreciate the info on the 12 volt kit.

Yes, it is a "244". Small approx. 21 HP tractor.

Thank you !!

If that tractor is a compact IH 244, I'm pretty sure it's a re badged Mitsubishi satoh. If you google
'Valley Power satoh' in VA I think, I'm sure he has wiring diagrams on his web site. Also good
source of parts as many are NLA from CNH.

Trent, sorry my explanation only applies to the 444/2444 or any unit with British BD-154 Diesel engine.
Instead of assuming typo, I should have looked up IH 244 on tractordata.com.

JimB ,

Thank you for all the info. Your first response helped me to realize that the GlowPlugs were wired incorrectly !! Now I need to find out how to properly arrange the wiring connecting the GlowPlugs and how or if the wiring is terminated.

I began a New Post labeled [b:4de2620b64]"International 244 - Need Help with GlowPlug Wiring"[/b:4de2620b64] seeking wiring instructions / diagram.

Thanks everyone for the input, I greatly appreciate it !!

Trent
