I see "BTO" used a lot on here. What does it mean? Ya, I know I will feel stupid once I am told. Paul

Brags too often
Bends them over
Brakes things often
Bought them out
Bigger than others
Buried the overdraft
Broke the other
Bank talk often
Bank taking offers

Most common Big time operator

A big acreage farmer, that thinks he is a whizzard, international conglomerate, and superstar, until the market tanks, his bank loans are called and he can not make the payments??????

Things that go around, come around.

I've seen the cycles, come and go.

Rustred, I heard a good one about BTO's Taking Care of Business. They were trying to cut this song and not having any luck when the pizza came that they ordered. The delivery guy got in on it and asked if he could add something to it. BTO did not replay the song but the guy played a back ground on a piano solo and it fit like a glove when it was played with what they had done. They never knew him or ever saw him again. Great song.

Big Time Operator, but it's often applied relative to the speaker. Just like regardless of your age: an old person is 15 years older than yourself; a young person is 15 years younger than yourself; and a BTO is two or more times the size of your operation. The term BTO never applies to the speaker.

I've always been told the only stupid question is the one not asked when you want to know. On the other hand there are stupid answers and I've unintentionally given a few  .
Most of the time on here it means big time operator but, like has been said, that's a relative term. I've seen some guys that I would classify as a BTO that only has 5 acres and a craftsman lawnmower. In my opinion it applies more to a self important attitude than actual size of the operation.

Big Time Operator, but sometimes it's more of an attitude than size of operation.

My understanding of the song was that the words were originally "White Collar Business". (If you listen to some of the other lyrics of the song, it's highly plausible) But they were intoxicated enough that one time the vocalist belted out "Takin' Care of Business" and it stuck.

As some of the others have said "Big Time Operator". And the definitions are pretty accurate.

I will add that to many smaller operators it also is a derogatory labeling of arrogant large farmers who will do anything to grow bigger and who think they run the world.

Here we have two BTO dairies not too far from me. One guy from what I know is honest and treats people fairly. The only people who refer to him as a BTO are the smaller operators who are jealous. The other guy would cheat his mother on land rent if he could and is about a arrogant as they come. He hates anyone who will stand up to him because by nature he is a bully. He doesn't like me too much which can be understandable but his dislike stems because I don't let him walk all over me, my family (he tried) or my friends. Even the other BTO's (non dairy) in the area refer to him as a BTO. Couple of years ago he got caught cheating an old man on land rent when a friend knew his lease was up and offered the old guy fair rent for our area. Then this guy is mad at my friend and talking trash because he lost over 300 acres right next to his home place. Karma baby! The same BTO is known for approaching family at receptions after a funeral trying to rent land. Not a very nice guy.

They are also known to park around the corner from
Napa and peek around the corner so they don't have
to go in while their former employee is inside, so
they don't have to take the chance of having to say
"hi." Then go home and tell the current employee
about it.

Yup. The one I worked for did that last Tuesday.

Nothing but a bully.

His kid is 18 and spent more on his old Toyota and
old Cummins last year than I made. There is no hope
he'll be any better. Sold a pick-up to his buddy for
4 times what he paid for it, knowing it needed at
least $1500 in parts, told him there was nothing
wrong with it.

Thanks Guys. I got a big kick out of all the responses. I should not forget that one soon. Paul

Paul thing of it is to I think most of us it's more of an attitude than anything else. Guy doesn't have to farm to have the same attitude. I know a guy who owns an auto dealership. Same kind of attitude. Drives him nuts that he isn't the biggest dealer in the area. But total jerk. Most of my contact with him is through a shooting club. On the range the guy spends more time showing off expensive hardware than shooting. Then gets mad when a guy with a less expensive gun outshoots him.

A wise old man one time told me that your attitude is the biggest determining factor in life. Most guys like that are never happy.
