July 4 hotdog survey

I had a couple of Ballpark dogs last night and it will be the last time. I've had Ballpark before and they were at least tolerable until last night. I've never been crazy about the regional brands such Zweigles, Hoffman's, and so forth. Years ago I had Hatfield's which is out of SE PA which I thought was pretty good. I don't really want spice but a good meat taste. Normally, I prefer burgers, chicken, and pork but some weeks the grocery budget says hotdogs.

Locally, I can go to several places that make traditional frankfurters, they are very good. We take 15 lbs of venison to a local pork store and have them make franks, you can add cheese to the recipe if you like, these are very good too. They're over $4.00/lb with extras, but you get almost 30lbs back with the added pork. They sure make a quick meal with some sides of ones liking. Likely its not best to make them a daily staple, but having some in the freezer in vacuum bags sure is nice when you are pressed for time.

I've got a tender stomach. You wouldn't know it to look at me! I look like I can eat everything! But dairy products are my friend, can't eat anything hot, spicy, acidy. No citrus, and now many fruits and veggies need to be thoroughly processed- cooked, frozen, etc.

Recently tried some Sugardale hot dogs(mix of critters) and they went down fine and stayed that way! I don't like chewing on the intestines on Hoffmans.

If we don't get some water soon, none of that will matter.

We buy Tony Packo's all pork hotdogs at Sams Club in Toledo. Actually in Holland Ohio just West nest to Toledo. Best hotdog I ever had. I had one for lunch.
Hotdogs

I am in the same boat in terms of tender stomach but for many years it was not like that. When I was in college I swear that I could have swallowed battery acid if dared to do so. I loved the spicy food but that changed in the past few years.

I thought you were doing better on rainfall but I agree things look very dire. I've been spraying the beans on the loamy ground as they have been inching along. The beans on the clay soil look scary.

White Eagle brand made here in Schenectady are really good. Don't know if they are out your way or not.

As we age, we lose our sense of taste for some things that we used to really enjoy. Just one more aggravating thing in the aging process. I used to really like hot dogs; still eat them but none of them taste quite the same to me as they used to.

Read the label, the ingredients are listed from most to least. Years ago I worked in the hot dog dept at a major packer. We made a "pork, water, beef" dog that was delicious. If you read the label on most franks today they are "pork chicken" or "chicken pork" and in my opinion don't even make good dog food. Remember......read the label.

When I was a kid no food was safe around me but working in a factory got badly burned on some chemical (idiot was using wrong stuff because he was to lazy to get the right stuff. ) ever since I have to be careful what I eat

My grandson, now 10 years old, will starve before eating a hot dog. His school teacher made a big deal out of telling his class about some of the ingredients, his real hang-up--pigs eyes! Teachers, some things are best left unsaid!

They changed the recipe on red hots at least around here and they are lousy now
That's not just my opinion either as they were what we always bought for events at the campground
And everyone has commented on how lousy they are this yr
As we had a cple packs left over from last yr there a remarkabe differance in them
As for me I was never a hot dog fan to begin with and my only have 6 or so a yr

Store bought wieners and bolnga has not been in my diet very much. Will eat boiled wiener at lunch on ground once in while. Like them grilled a little better but will eat only one either way. O ya we are having steak tonite. Son is out of Marines so is home. Me and him and couple friends celebrating.

A hot dog label should read "Pork, Beef, water, spices", never turkey or chicken.

Any dog with this list is generally acceptable to me. Top of the list is Smith's from Erie PA($4 a pound). Not a dollar a pack dog by any stretch, but do you really want to eat something they can make for $1 a pound?

The cheap brands in the past were palatable especially when combined with coleslaw, mustard, or relish. I am not a big hotdog fan but some weeks call for spending a little less on meat.

I used to find Hatfield's when I ventured down to Syracuse. Some of the pork producers here years ago shipped to Hatfield's and they got product back as they wanted. I've got a connection to SE PA so maybe it is time to utilize it.

Just put more stuff on it if it taste bad LOL. At some point it will taste like something else i promise. LOL sorry just had to

Not a big dog fan here either. Won't eat the cheap ones at all regardless of the brand. Heck out dog won't even eat Ballpark dogs.

I'll eat good brats, chops, steak and chicken off the grill but I will go hungry before I eat cheap hot dogs. But then I can stand to live off the fat of the land a little too.

I like the Petit Jean grillers. They are a little bigger than a regular HD and made with real pork and beef. I'm not sure if they are available outside of Arkansas.

I should add that they are only available on line and they ain't cheap but well worth it.

Don't eat the nasty things, think of all the cuts and things from a cow and a hog you know of and whats left is what is in a hot dog the only thing worse is Potted Meat.

Traditional Farmer- Shoot! and I love a potted meat sandwich with a slice of garden ripe tomato!

Yup, just not the same since they took out all the good stuff....cow's lips, pork rectums, eyeballs, udders, etc....

I can't in good conscience feed my family hot dogs. Some careful shopping will find meat that looks like meat for a similar price per pound.

Anyone I ever met that worked at the Thumans plant told me they have seen the operation and do not eat hot dogs. They told me if I saw it I would not eat them either.

Eldon,

Your post reminded me of the court case where a thief who robbed a meat packing plant tried to get the case dismissed because the arresting officer laughed at him.
The arresting officer laughed saying you know what you stole? A bunch of cases of beef rectums. The judge said the policeman had a reason to laugh and refused to drop the case.

The only good that came out of my heart attack was that the doctor said no more Polish dogs from Sam's Club. Never had a taste for plain old Hot Dog's. Would rather have a bowl of cereal than a dog.
