plastic gearbox coupler???

We got a voicemail in our company mailbox from a guy who had a question about a "plastic coupler" they were making for us. We asked around the engineering dept and nobody had outsourced anything like that.

Guy next to me returned the call and the guy said "yeah I got a question on this plastic coupler we're making for you that [u:a4dc6b14a5]connects the gearbox of the brush hog to the motor[/u:a4dc6b14a5]". He had the wrong company and/or phone number. But we got a good laugh out of the poor unsuspecting buyers that will be getting a "brush hog" with a [u:a4dc6b14a5]plastic[/u:a4dc6b14a5] coupler on the gearbox. Guess they won't need shear bolts,

I've seen plenty of plastic couplers on electric motors. I believe they are called Joy couplers(?) I have a 10' rotary cutter that has a rubber coupler on the side gearboxes. It is kind of a shock absorber. I don't really like the setup but it does work.

I understand a bit of amusement from the situation, and I can't say about coupling a bush hog, but in reality, modern technology has developed plastic (resin?) compounds that will take about as much punishment as metal in the same application.

What's the big deal? If designed
properly plastic does great in
applications like that and doesn't fret
like steel on steel splines etc. Plastic
is not all created equal, this coupling
surely isn't made of plastic like
carnival toys

Quite a few vehicles have rubber couplings instead of u-joints on drive shafts. Im sure they fail but I have yet to see one worn out, broken or anything wrong with it.

Like these, 3 bolts per yoke.

The Alfa Romeo Alfetta series are front engine with clutch, gear box and final drive in a unit at the back for weight distribution.

Which means that the drive shaft is live all the time. So the sections are spigoted together just in case and the drive is transmitted by flexible rubber donuts like those.
