Ot Computer software???

I have upgraded to a POS system for the new hardware store. They do not come loaded with any office soft ware. My computer at home is still in use. My question is this. I have a new Microsoft Office Basic Edition 2003 cd with the key code and all. That came with the home computer. Can I load it in the new store computer? Would it be compatible? Or do I have to go buy a new one and the Excel cd for the new computer. Both computers are dell.

There should be no problem to install this on the new store computer unless it the basic edition is installed on your home computer? If yes then you can uninstall it from the home machine and load it on the store machine.

I am interested the same sort of deal , so I looked this up

Just make sure that your shop software will work with Open Office and isn't tied to Microsoft.

OO can have trouble with macros from Microsoft stuff for example

(quoted from post at 14:17:53 07/01/16) It should work and sounds legal to me.

Or you could skip Microsoft and use Open Office, it does everything you need.
Open Office

Libreoffice is generally preferred to Openoffice, originally based on the same thing, but better community development, etc. Libreoffice is a good alternative if not tied to Microsoft requirements. I would guess with that old of an Office disk, Libreoffice would work just fine instead, at least wouldn't hurt to try it, for free.

Otherwise, if there is Internet access in the store, there is a free version of Microsoft Office online. Or, Google Docs is also good (and has offline mode if needed).

Point Of Sale systems may not be the best place to install any
Office software, but if you have a requirement for that and your
POS system is Windows based it may work.
What version of Windows is it running?

Royse The new system is windows 7. But I think widows 10 is already trying to sneek in. The POS is called Rock solid and as a back office computer. I wanted to use micro soft office. So I can have and use the same word documents and excel spread sheets that I have spent the last seven years honing to my hardware store needs and besides Yahoo mail blows. I am not much of a computer person. I am going from a 2800 square foot store to a 6500 square foot brand new Destination True Value store. Learning a POS system and also the color match computers. Will be computer overload for me and my slow learning curve in computers. I have recently upgraded to a smart phone to help me in the store from a flip phone. And that thing makes my head hurt. So by staying with the Micro soft office that will lesson my learning curve and computer anxiety. When I have many other things that will need my full attention and brain power to get this new store off the ground and running the best it can be.
Thanks for every ones help.

Your old version of Office will install. Google Docs and free Microsoft Office online will both open your old files. Libreoffice and Openoffice will also open your old files.

All of them are pretty easy to use, they kept the interface "simple" through the years, common buttons at the top.

As long as you have good backups, you could try opening your files to see if there are issues. I'd probably suggest Libreoffice as the best option, not depending on Internet, etc.

I guess I prefer free options when available, security updates for Office 2003 stopped as well, the other options get you up to date.

So, it's up to you.

Office 2003 will run on Windows 7
It is not compatible with any newer version of Windows so
if they upgrade to Windows 10 you will likely have trouble.

Extended support for Office 2003 ended in 2014.
Mainstream support for Windows 7 ended last year.
Extended support ends in 2020, so it may be time to learn
a newer version of both Office and Windows. Your choice.

Best of luck with the new store! :)

Thanks guys. I will call the POS manufacturer and clarify that it will still work properly with windows 10. If so I will let it down load and skip learning windows 7 and just learn the 10 right up front. That way I will not know just how much it sucks compared to window 7. I will spring for the newest micro soft office and excel if it will not upset the new POS system.

The kids wrecked one laptop by letting it update to 10 from 7. Two old laptops are still XP, probably the best operating windows machines . Another is 7 for parental use. Experimenting with an old Mac 881 laptop and ordered another Mac for the daughter to use at college.
