Mounted Cultivator spacing on B Farmall

Finally had some time to get the mounted cultivator on dad's B Farmall. Went for a test drive, center the drivers side row in the center of the shields. After 20 feet, I looked backed and saw the other row cover by dirt because the inside shield was on the outside of the left row. So I got out the tape measure and measured the distance between the center of the shields which was 42 inches, not good on 40 inch rows. The interesting part is that there is a 2 inch spacer welded into the shield bracket on all 4 shields which mounts on the gangs which makes them narrow if the gang spacing is correct.

Anyways, has anybody got any experience on setting up any cultivator as in gang spacing and shield spacing?

Thanks

Don

Assuming you have the b-238 cult. I have never seen a 2in spacer on the gangs. Are the row shanks offset. For 40in rows they are off-set from the row to have room for the guards. We did 400 plus A per yr with 238 exhaust lift from 48-62 wwhen we got a 461 for the M. Are your brackets for the guards u-shaped the 2in spacers have me puzzled.

Yes, they are. Somebody cut the brackets in half and welded in a 2 inch spacer. They were checking corn back then and maybe adjust the gangs for going cross ways and then welded in the 2 in spacer to get the shields closer to the row.

Anyways, I found some other shields and used those. I adjust the gangs with shields on so the shields were 3 1/2 inch from the row and it looks a lot better. The cultivator hasn't been used since the 70's the shovels are rusty so I will be polishing these up.

It never amazing what some can do to a piece of equipment do you need the original measurements for the shields. They maybe didnt raise corn mite have been something else.

My Grandpa, Dad and then my brother both used the cultivator. Back in the 70's, I made three rounds with it and knock over a lot of corn with it.

I found some recommendations on how to line up the gangs and adjusted the gangs that way. My brother and I pick up some extra cultvator parts from another person and there was 3 shields that I bolted on the gangs. I cut one of the other shield mounting bracket and some what welded it back together to the 5 1/2 inches. the cultivator works a lot better. With just dirt, the shields would let the dirt slide right up to the plants. It still plugs up with the grass roots but there is some learning to be done yet.

Next year, work on plowing better, level the planting area, plant straighter, and pick them blessed rocks!
