HF Auto Dimming Welding Helmet Fix

If you've got a HF welding helmet that's quit working try this ----

http://www.pskl.us/wp/?s=harbor+freight

I have 2 of them but one is so old that it doesn't come apart so easy as the one shown which is the same as my 'newer' one.

I got the Radio Shack battery holders and de-soldering braid and went for it with the 'new' (5-10 years old) helmet - BEHOLD ...... it WORKS!

Since the helmet has a built in solar charger I've ordered 4 [b:7f02cc589e]rechargeable[/b:7f02cc589e] AAA batteries - don't know yet if that will work, but in the meanwhile the Coppertops are easy to change and I don't need a new helmet!

I googled the cr2330. I don't think it's rechargeable battery. Not sure how the solar charger in helmet works. Only guessing it could be to power up the darkening device while you are welding and the cr2330 runs the brains for the helmet. Again, no idea except I don't think the CR2330 is rechargeable.

Nice to know they have batteries in side in case mine stops working. geo.

Geez - I never thought of that - oh well, still gonna be easy to replace the AAAs and they should out last the 2330s (or....maybe not :? ). Anyway, thanks for the input! :)

Good information, thanks! I always leave my helmet lying or hanging where it will be recharging when not in use. I noticed recently that a friend keeps his in a cloth bag. Is the light from occasional welding adequate to keep the batteries up?

I found cheap Cr2330s with the solder lugs on ebay. No need for wiring and external mount. Just replace the originals.

If you notice in my post I mentioned that I have 2 HF helmets. The first one that I got lasted less than 5 years or so and I had it hanging on the wall in a part of the shop that did not get much light; either from the ceiling (10') lights or the north facing window. The second, newer one, was kept on a shelf on it's side with the solar panel exposed to the window and it lasted about 10 years BUT it could have had improved batteries or......????? My take is that 'If God had meant for man to work with electrons He would have made them big to see.' :?

I understand that but, looking ahead, I don't know if I will be able to change the internal batteries in another few years (Mother Nature and Father Time, ya know.) Oh well, ''Every dog has his day', as they say!

'The CR Lithium battery is a 3 volt, non-rechargeable battery but the good news is that these batteries do offer a very long shelf life, ranging [i:7607c9e71c][b:7607c9e71c]7-10[/b:7607c9e71c] [/i:7607c9e71c]years. CR Lithiums are often used in the following applications: car starters, garage door openers, and computer memory back, just to name a few. There is little doubt that you have CR Lithium batteries in some or even many, of the consumer electronic devices you use every day.'

So, If I wasn't quite so 'long in the tooth' I would've just replaced the CR2330s.

My Lincoln auto darkening helmet stopped working. I couldn't find the correct battery, so I bought a 2 pack of the CR2330s. Installed one and it works just fine. It will soon be one full year, and still working just fine. If it stops working, I'll install the second battery.

Is replacing the battery in the Lincoln about the same as the HF? Did you have to take it all apart and de-solder the battery or...............? :)

Don't remember exactly, but the battery was NOT soldered in. The whole process was straight forward and self-explanatory.

I am happy with mine, but I will confess that I have never used any other brand.
