Guy has this jd 45 skidloader. Runs good he says. He says needs tire. So I drive over there about an hour away. I ended up calling him 3/4 times for directions. Finally get there. He starts it up. Noticed it sounded like it was missing bad. First thing I noticed there was nothing coming out of exhaust on right side. He informs me the manifold is busted. didn't see that in the ad. The hyd seemed to work but it would not move forward or reverse except 5/6 inches. He said it was full of oil but probably needed a filter. He said it had been working but just quit while I was on the way over. Needless to say I left and wont be going back there anytime soon. He had gotten the machine on a trade in for a truck he had. Another craigs list ad.

A local reporter responded to an ad, & reported on it in the local paper. A used vehicle; cant remember what type. When reporter asked for directions, the owner? asked what for. Reporter says to see the vehicle! Supposed owner says I still need to haul it home from the auction!!! He probably didn't even have it, & would buy what someone wanted if the price was right! I would stay away from Craigslist!

I have had a lot of success buying and selling on CL. There are plenty of con artists and scammers everywhere. Worst place for no-show and no payers and shoppers without money who will wear your but out for pics and info is facebook.

Craig's list is simply the digital equivalent of the classified ads in the newspaper of days gone by. I have bought and sold on Craig's list, and have had pretty much positive experiences.
There are good and bad everywhere. One has to be able to sort the grain from the chaff. I sold several cars that way and bought quite a few items. When I see warning signs like odd ways of paying, items not available for inspection, and other things like that, I just leave them alone.
In the fairly recent past, I bought a couple of snow blowers. Did some repair work and resold them for a profit. UI also bought a parts truck for the engine to get a friends engine replaced.

Take reasonable precautions and it is just like answering an ad in the newspaper's classified section.

Agreed. I've sold everything from hay to pickups on Craigslist and I haven't been burned - yet. Wasted a few trips to look at things that weren't what they said they were - but I've had dealerships waste my time the same way.

I recently had a dealer advertising on CL about a really nice pickup he had for sale, looked good in the pictures and he went on about how it was a California truck that had never seen Kansas salt and the frame even looked like a new one with only 80K miles. He kept going on about what a sweet ride this thing was. Drove almost two hours to check it out with cash in my pocket to buy it. In person you could see the rust bubbling through the upper fenders and around the rear of the bed. Driver's seat was broken down and the fabric worn through and torn, looked like it had three different colors of white sprayed on it from various repairs. My guess was it was much closer to 180K than 80K miles. Walked around it once and got back in my car and drove off.

I'm sure he complained about those people who answer CL ads and never show up like they say they will.

At least you got away without being knocked in the head. I just saw on the news a few minutes ago where a woman met a guy in the Tractor Supply parking lot with something that she had for sale. The guy took the item from her, dragged her across the parking lot with his car and got away with the goods.

Well I don't have anything like that to worry about, but it is always best to use caution when meeting someone for a deal away from home. I used to junk cars, now I mess with tractors. Car people are scarry as can be to me, tractor people are like myself, just a little odd but mostly honest and peaceful. But just got a text from CL looker on a burned tractor I have. I know by the first line he is likely to be a scammer with a certified check. They are easy to figure out.

I usually get 10 phone calls off craigslist from people who want something for nothing. There overbearing and down right mean trying to take advantage of you or beat you down on price.
But, the people that show up and actually buy are some of the nicest people you would ever want to meet.

"just a little odd but mostly honest and peaceful"

Got that right. Dad bought a John Deere A from a guy one time who was a little out there to say the very least. He said the carburetor was in a little shed,he'd go in and get it. Dad stepped toward the doorway and the guy told him not to come in,muttered "I've got stuff in here I don't want you to see.".

No idea what was in there. He's been in to Board of Review and even acted strange there.

Just got my second text from scammer. Says : I am a patrol officer but will arrange for the freight that will visit you to pick up. Now this is without asking me any details about the tractor. You will get this all time off CL. All you have to say is cash only and they usually quit.

I knew an Oliver dealer that was robbed, shot and killed opening up his dealership one morning back about 1970 so I guess we all should have stayed away from Oliver dealerships?
Fellow's name was Watts at Chance, Virginia real nice fellow, living life carries a certain amount of danger and it just ain't dealing on CL.

I agree with all of that! 8)

I cannot even imagine how a site with a name like "facebook" ever turned into anything more than another place for teenyboppers to post pictures of their cats. Even the name sounds like something a 4 year old might come up with. Also, from what I hear from others it is a place for gossip and bickering.
I will never join up. I left the third grade behind me long ago.

R. W. Watts, and I think it was in the mid to late 70s. I used to order parts from him. Very nice, personable, knowledgable and accomodating gentleman. I called about a manual once, and he sent it with an invoice. I was 200 miles away, and he didn't know me from Adam. I was just a teenager and that really impressed me.
