What is the Spring Loaded Pin on a PTO shaft called

and how to replace it (if possible).

Almost always come here before hitting google. Was hoping to mow some pasture today and dragged the rotary mower out of the shed. Hit it with some grease, checked oil, hit the blades with a grinder quick just to give them a little edge. Went to hook up the PTO shaft to the tractor and the little spring loaded pin that locks the shaft to the tractor was missing. Anyway, is this a replaceable part or am I looking at a new yoke/u-joint? It is not readily apparent to me how it locks in, anybody have a good description or video they can point me to if it is z replaceable part. Priced a complete shaft and would like to fix what I have,

Kirk It is called a PTO lock pin. There are two common types. Also the newer kits sometimes work differently than the one you had. The are supposed to be safer. Just Google PTO lock pin and you will get several hits.
 
There is numerous different kits to fix that pto lock pin or whatever you want to call it. Our local TSC store sells a variety of Weasler brand kits to fit many different applications. Or, if you like, try this link

Have to love this site, 4-5 minutes and already have responses.

How do I tell what I need if I don't have the lock pin that came out of the shaft? Is it a universal design that any of them will work?

To get you by many PTO shafts also have a hole in them and the PTO on the tractor so you can use a simple bolt to get by with till you can find what you need to fix it correctly
 
If you have to mow, your tractor shaft and your yoke might have a hole in it to place a large cotter pin in to get by, but just to get by until your new lock shows up. chris
 
The pieces must be laying on the floor of the shed where you unhooked it last year. Take a look there 1st. I mean where would have they gone?

The new Euro style (triangular hollow shaft) don't have a hole all the way thru...and the area around the pin has to be peened to keep it in. Kind of a stupid design compared to the old ones....
 
TSC opened in Gettysburg 2-3 weeks ago. Hoping they start adjusting their stocking levels, have stopped there for horse feed and shelves have been empty of the variety my wife wants. Since Agway closed last year I have to make a run to Hanover for feed which is not the direction we usually function.

The TSC web site shows the PTO pins are not stocked/out of stock at the local stores or to call. Guess I'll make a few calls after they open.

For me the end seems to break off and the rest is still in there, then I just use a small bolt or whatever to push it to mount on the pto shaft, but replace them soon as I can.
 
Not to expensive to repair - unless you end up buying an entire yoke.

5.99 to 7.99 for repair kits, 49.99 to 59.99 for entire yokes - but if you replace the yoke you will probably need a new cross bearing to - another $20 to $60.

Had a few that were used for years that way - the PTO coupler on our post hole digger has been that way for 40+ years. Used to infrequent to remember it needed fixed - the one time it was fixed it froze up while sitting in the grass and was broken again after hitting it with a wrench to free it up.
 
I was faced with the same problem. I put a bolt in the hole and used a hose clamp to hold it in. That was a few years ago. I have the pin, but never bothered to installed it. Stan
 
If you're good with a welder you can make one. I did and it worked. You would need to do some grinding too.
