... for someone's competence today! This week the idler went out on the 7800. Got a new one and a belt as it was shredded. Deere didn't have the belt. Huh? There's lots of stuff that uses that belt!? So they rush it in as planting can't continue. I go pick it up. They had ordered in the wrong one. The belt and idler debacle ended up costing me three days.

It's finally dry enough to work fields again. Yesterday it was a bit too wet so I serviced the 8430 and found the water pump out. They didnt have that one so they ordered it for first thing this morning. So I take in the old one and have the fan hub pressed on the new one. That took 2 1/2 hours. No lie. They knew I was coming, too. Got home and put the pump on only to find that when the fan was bolted to it the blades hit the hydraulic coupler and the hoses were askew. It was 12:05. I got in the pickup and flew to town calling the service manager's cell phone the whole way. Finally got him. He lets me in and looks it up. The water pump is the wrong one by one digit. They actually had the right one in the shelf. That's handy, because I even gave the parts guy the engine serial number yesterday. So I head home to remove the pump (which weighs about 50 pounds) and he calls in one of the techs to switch the fan hub. By 3:00 I was headed home with the pump. Thank goodness for service guys that bend over backwards during planting. Got the right one put in and the driest field opened so it can be planted tomorrow. Why must I second guess every part I get?

That's an old scam car dealers have used for years. If they don't have the part you want, they'll sell you the wrong one to get you locked in as a customer. They have your money and they know you'll be back when you realize you have the wrong part.

I wouldn't try that with any of the dealers around here. When they are closed, they are closed. Unless you are their number 1 buyer or want to pay extra for OT

Sometimes you just cant win.
Needed u-joints for a 4x4 once so not trusting the people at the parts counter I looked up all the part numbers myself and called in to have them check stock.
Parts in stock so off I go for a 30 mile ride each way to pick them up.
Get home, go to put them in only to find out one was wrong.
Double checked the listing and the part number is right.
Pull out a micrometer and check specs only to find out the wrong part was in the box.

If you used to go to the same dealers I used to (or sometimes HAVE to) go to, you are dead on. I usually look up the part number myself to avoid the wrong part, but when I call to ask them if they have it or such, I'm being a bother because it's old. I already did half the work getting the number for them, they should at least appreciate that.

I used to buy a lot of parts from GM when I had the shop.
I would call them up and give them the last 8 of the VIN and ask for the part I required.
Often they would ask what vehicle it was for and I would say if I tell you there is a good chance you will screw something up, but if you look up the VIN on your computer it will tell you exactly what part to send.
Was always good for a laugh and I got the right parts.
