Cut Monday, raked Friday morning, baked Friday
afternoon. 170 bales. Now I have to truck them
back to the home place and wrap them.and to make
a good day even better , my best girl came to ride

Gotta love red clover!! Single cut or double cut Bruce ? We prefer double cut as we too wrap first cut and take seed from the 2nd cut. Our alfalfa really got hit badly by the aphids and dry weather, but the red really came through.

Double cut,almost have to wrap of chop clover to get it saved . Sure makes a load of cheap milk, but very few around here grow it. Bruce

When you wrap those bales how dry is the hay? My friend jeff is thinking about wrapping some bales and we were wonderimg what moisture they should be.

'Double cut' means the plants will bloom twice . I plant 40% red clover , 40% alfalfa, 20% Timothy. The first year , all you really see is the clover. The second year very little clover ,but the Alfalfa and timothy come on strong , I try to take 3 cuts for three years , then plough down. Bruce

Well jon , I don't have a moisture tester , so I couldn't say for sure. My rule of thumb is , if it dried for another day , it would probably be ok as dry hay. Just a guess at a number I would say right around 30%. If the hay is too wet , the bales are slimy when you try to feed them , and much heavier to handle. Best thing to do would be to try a few at different moistures ,and see what suits your needs. We find that our bales are plenty heavy, and you want a tractor with a stout front end and heavy loader . Many older two wheel drive tractors do not have heavy enough front ends to carry wet bales , and break spindles etc. Bruce
