Remember as a child Christmas never seemed to get here? Well, at age 69 the first tomato of the season never seems to ripen.

Dad had one just about ripe and the darn starlings got into it. They also have destroyed my pepper plant.

Great looking tomato plants.

Well, I'd say yours are at the Thanksgiving stage of "waiting on Christmas", whereas ours are not even to the Independence Day stage yet (only about 6-7 inches tall).

I have picked 3 or 4 tomato's so far this year. Got 2 zukes so far and had one of them with supper. Did a stir fry tonight and almost ever veggie in it was out of the garden

Pete, do you ever go to the farmers market at B'ham, wonder if a person can get good buys on vegs there now?

i have never been to the farmers market in birmingham. lived about 45 miles north of there in cullman, al where they still had a casual farmers market where they gathered in a vacant field to sell local produce. retired in 2010 to the country. Old made me jealous but i'm close to him; green beans, squash and corn bread for supper.

Pete:

Pick them NOW! Slice them into 1/4" discs, dip in Flour, and fry them in a skillet with a little Butter. Season to taste with Salt & Pepper.

I'm having trouble with rabbits eating the tops off my green bean plants. Been sprinkling them with cayenne pepper. Doesn't seem to help. I think the pepper is blowing off. Any other suggestions? Thanks Gary

I used to be like that too but for 5 or 10 years I didn't think tomatoes tasted as good as they used to. Bought some Amish 1885 heir loom plants, plant leaves look like potatoes, got some Abe Lincoln plants whatever they are, and can't think of the other kind, we'll see how these taste.

Grow herbs like basil and also plant marigolds around the garden that helps a lot. I never have any problems with rabbits but then again I do also have barn cats so maybe that helps

O like this time of year. I tell my wife I am going out to the store and she knows I mean out to the garden to pick things for supper. Fresh herbs and veggies etc

Rabbits are tearing up my green beans this year. My barber told me to crush up some toilet bowl fresheners, the ones that hang in the bowl, around the plants to keep varmints away, including deer.

Years ago a whole group of stone masons were working on a big house, very rich people. The rich ladys son was about the same age as most of the workers,He was a real wise guy to the workers and real smug.He came out each day looked at his first tomato getting ripe.He was bragging hes gonna have the first ripe tomato in town. One of the workers ate it one day,,left the core on the fencepost. It was not a good scene,,the boss of the crew was mad too!

You can make up all the fancy concoctions you want, but the only way to stop rabbits from devastating your garden once they have found it is to kill them, period. BTDT. You are wasting your time with any effort other than eliminating them.

I never have a rabbit problem but a lot of it is due to the cats I have out side. Seems that rabbits and cats do not get along well but then again I have found dead rabbits young one that is that the cats have caught. But herbs and other such things also help. Now a ground hog well the only way to stop one of them is with a piece of lead
