Why is it???

Why can you take a normal everyday educated well mannered person;
Put a steering wheel in their hand and a gas peddle under their right foot
And they turn into the most in considered; in a rush; person you have ever seen.

Yes I know I have at times fit into this group by not paying attention to details
But I do try to be aware of my surroundings and be courteous.

the veneer of civilization is very thin?

Don't you know, you get behind the wheel and the world goes away and you are in your own world. Especially if there is a cell phone in the equation.

Might be cause the powers that be have decided that respect and morals are old outdated concepts that have no place in a modern society.

I think it comes down to the "ME, ME, ME" mindset that a lot of people have today. Add in the rush. Most people never think about things like travel time. It takes about 32 minutes and 43 seconds to travel 30 miles. At 60 30 minutes. Now toss in a stop sign and traffic entering and leaving the roadway. Most likely going to drop that down to about a minute and a half time savings. Driving 5 over the limit isn't really saving enough time to justify discourteous driving. But people don't look at that. It's simple. Driving fast saves time. Indisputable fact. They never ask just how much time. Add in that more people are commuting further to work. Now add in picking up kids from daycare where being late is expensive. Or being late to work gets you in trouble or maybe fired. Or keeping this tractor related getting in to get that part before the dealership closes!

But it boils down to being in a rush.

How many times have you had somebody pass you, almost hit an oncoming car, then you pull right up next to them at the next stop light, make a right turn on red and actually get through the light before they do? It's happened to me more times than I can even count with the stock trailer.

I could understand being in a rush to get to work on time.

But try in get in the way of a industrial area at 505 pm.
I see people start off in the left lane when the want to get onto the interstate ramp 1/2 block up the road on the right.
Or when they enter the interstate they are up to speed and in the left lane before the solid white line on the entrance ramp ends.

And these are the same people that complain about how expensive gasoline is.
If they just slowed down they could get double the MPG and it would not be so expensive per mile.

Those are the people that go flying by someone on the side of the highway trying to change a flat. I always try to move over to give them some room.. That is unless the jerks driving like jerks won't let me over into the passing lane. A lot of times with a truck, you can make yourself fit though. I'd love to see one of those jerks that won't get over on the side of the road trying to change a tire and bowl em over with the turbulence from a set of doubles. Maybe it'd scare them enough to not be such a browneye.

I have seen a guy run smack in the back of a cop car because of this.
Big truck on shoulder with tire guy on white line.
Cop blocks right lane to protect tire guy.
Everyone is moving to left because of this but moving at speed. About 60.
The right lane is void of traffic.
Here comes a 4x4 running up the right lane with a smaller car right on his rear end.
4x4 cuts in left lane at last moment and the car behind him has no place to go.
Id say he was doing 70 to 80 when he ran in the back of the stopped cop car.
At least it was a empty car and was parked back far enough the cop and tire guy were not hurt.
Can not say the same about the car driver.

In this neighborhood, we all have to watch out for anyone driving a Mercedes or a BMW. They own the world and the roads and they will drive to kill you!

You know the difference between a BMW and a porcupine? On a porcupine the pricks are on the outside!

I participated in a tractor ride sponsored by a radio station on Friday and Saturday. I observed that the vehicles that could not wait to get over the hills to pass were 95% higher echelon vehicles (Cadillacs, BMWs etc), and mostly female drivers. Very few value their own life enough to wait for clear vision to pass. Just my $.02 worth.

I believe that the first sentence of your post is the cause of a lot of the ills in our society.
Instead of asking "how can I help?" it seems that most folks would rather ask "what's in it for
me?". Greed, selfishness, and using others as traction on the climb to the "top" is the result.
It seems that many people have forgotten, or maybe have never known, what brings true happiness and
satisfaction in life.

I found out that drivers ed was a waste of money.
Paid three or four hundred for daughters drivers ed and
she never learned how to park, pass, use turn lane and
nothing about stopping distances.
The teacher was a coach waiting out retirement, and he
made it clear to the students.
I'll teach the next two daughters to drive!

...or the lives of whomever may appear on the other side of the hill. When you have a pricey car like that, laws don't apply to you it seems. Or so they think

So, there I was proceeding down a narrow ONE-WAY street to my garage to work on a car. What is trying to come up the wrong way??? A BMW (Bavarian Money Waster). I signaled it to go the other way. It waited for me to pass. I stayed where I was. The offending driver finally left going in the CORRECT direction.

Why is it that the more expensive the car, the more RUDE the driver??

A long time ago, I was told this lesson:

The toes you step on while climbing up the ladder to success may be connected to the butts you will have to kiss on your way back down.

Wasn't it a Bill Cosby bit that went something like - Your butt
isn't in a hurry to get out of bed, your butt isn't in a hurry to
finish your shower, your butt isn't in a hurry to finish breakfast
and leave home but as soon as your butt hits the driver's seat,
YOU ARE IN A HURRY!
