Good luck if you try! Apparently its possible to restore although i have never tried to do it.

Try the SEARCH icon on the bottom left; its the second icon, looks like a magnifying glass.
If you know what your file was named it should find it for you. It should not be lost.

It may not open because they want you to buy Office 365, or something similar.

Try a system restore.

Go to "All Programs", select "Accessories", scroll down to "System Tools", and select "System Restore". You will be able to select or enter a date prior to the problem occurring. Wouldn't hurt to go a month or so prior. Follow the prompts through the process. Will take about 15 minutes.

That's the first thing I'd try.

I do it all the time. Whenever I use my laptop on a public network, like in a motel room, I always restore it to a prior date in case it picked up anything unwanted on the public network.

Good luck!

rrlund,

HOLD ON... All may NOT be lost.

This just happened to me at work the other day!! All my files, folders and photos were GONE. ALSO my Quickbooks was gone and so was an entire program that is specific to my job!!!

BUT my bossed looked at it and apparently after the final restart required for the upgrade... somehow I had logged into the "Administrative OR Backup Account", rather than MY account with my files and folders.

He took care of getting me into the correct area... because I had to leave work for an appointment - so I'm not sure how he did it. (And just shutting down and restarting did not help - that took me back into the same account).

So search Microsoft or Google for "how to locate your files in Windows 10"... they are likely in there.

So hang in there... once my boss got me into the right area, ALL my files and programs were there.

Could you find out for me? I have it backed up on a zip drive, but it's not quite current. I even tried to restore what I have backed up and it won't accept it.

I'm getting off this thing for a while, because if I keep messing with it anymore tonight,I'm going to take an axe to it,GUARANTTEED!

my daughter and a friend both had to take their computers in to be cleaned and restore after an unrequested Window 10 was installed and they lost their applications. hopefully you won't

RRLund, I do computer repair at work, and it's pretty straight forward to do. You can roll back from Windows 10 to Windows 7 for 30 days after the upgrade to Windows 10 - after that you cannot.

Go to the 'Start' button, then click on the icon that looks like a gear which is the 'Settings'. Then under 'Settings' in the bottom left hand corner it should say 'Updates and Recovery' click that. Next in the left hand column click 'Recovery'. There is will say you can roll back to Windows 7 for 30 days, click to get the process going and it will ask you why your rolling back, and I always put that it upgraded on it's own to 10 as my reason as that's frustrating. Then it will offer to check for the latest Windows 10 updates, but bypass that and say go back to 7. In about 30-40 minutes you'll be back to Windows 7 and happy.

I am doing this off memory so it might not be 100% correct but should be close. Feel free to send me an email as well and I'd be glad to help you. I talked people through this all the time at work.

I'll bet they are still there but just not showing up. Microsoft omitted the Chess game that came with Windows 7 but we found a way to restore it and it came back with all the statistics from all the games I have played. Wouldn't have happened if it had been erased.

As soon as I try to move the cursor up to "Recovery",the box disappears.

Royse is working on a car right now. Maybe he can figure it out when he gets done. I'm about to hang it up for the night. I might have to take it to the shop that got the FBI virus out of it for me and have them take this VIRUS out of it.

Maybe they can do something to keep 7 running until they come out with something to replace 10.

I got it to restore Quicken up to some time in 2014 from the zip drive, but it should have been updated to at least February 2016.

The files must still be in the computer somewhere. But where?

Royse just called. I got it back up in less than 10 seconds. The darned thing was hiding in a file that had a 2 on the end instead of just the file name. I clicked that and it restored instantly.
