Does anyone know if there is an electric governor replacement for an old tractor? I have a Massey 85 with a totally useless governor. Since it's internal and requires a lot of work to
repair it, I'd like to replace it with an electric governor. Anyone know if such a thing exists?
 
Never seen an electric one. Have seen belt driven governors for use on engines without provision for a governor.

I would sure give fixing the one you have a try before going into adding one.
 
MSD Ignition makes electronic ignition systems with built in RPM limiters. I have one on my pulling tractor to keep the RPM down to "legal" limits for pulling. They are not cheap ($400?) and you need to have 12V neg ground.

Probably cost less to repair what you have. If the tractor is gas may just be the synchronization needs reset. If diesel may just need the pump serviced to correct governor trouble. That's what both my 85s needed anyway.
 
The unit MSD sells is a rpm limiter, not a governor. It only kills the ignition above a set rpm, does not close the carb throttle plate, so will not work as a governor.

There are electronic governors on the market, but the ones I have found are very complicated and expensive. Better fix your stock mechanical governor.
 
i have one on my 2655 oliver with 800 ci engine, guy had it before me put it on, it works but id think the belt driven on would be better

A AC generator electronic controller would work for single speed and maybe variable speed. The controller would require some sort of pulsed feedback to monitor the rpm. The controller would drive an ordinary electric/mechanical positioner.
