John Deere 71

I have a pair of 71's I use for food plots. I have an old 494 planter off to the side and wonder if the incectiside boxes would fit on the wheel frame so I could use dry fertilizer when planting? Crazy or stupid? I only plant 2-3 acres of corn and sunflowers a year so refilling a few times is not an issue. the 71 box frame looks nearly identical to the fit on the 494 and the 71 has sprockets on the wheel. anyone ever try something like this?

I use pesticide boxes for fertilizer on my 71 but had to open up the slot in the bottom with a
rotary file to get enough to come through. Without doing this you just won't be able to apply
enough fertilizer to do much good, even on the widest open position. I set mine up to dribble the
fertilizer right in front of the press wheel. It isn't as good as getting it in the ground but as
long as you get a rain soon after it's better than nothing.

There are some folks who take 7000 units for food plots, and modify the herb/insect boxes to apply fert. Different metering mechanism.
