No Dead Woodchuck

Trap and surrounding area completely undisturbed this morning. He does have another hole in a very hard to get at place. I suppose I'm gonna have to set the other trap back there somehow. Just not sure how. Keeping two pets away from the trap is very inconvenient. Hopefully this won't go on too long.

I don't understand why he won't compromise with you and just go into the trap lol. Strange how it works, you could watch him use the same hole for a month, kick dirt into it and lay branches over it once a week, but set a trap there and it throws everything off.

That is for sure. The entry I set the trap over is by far his favorite. Not anymore, I guess!

Cantaloupe in a live-trap sometimes gets them... then dispatch in the manner of your choosing.

I don't think cats/dogs would be tempted by cantaloupe (but you never know - we had a dog that ate strawberries). But at least if your pets get into a live trap, it's not a big deal.

Pets are why I use live traps that way no problem if one gets caught in it. As for his other hole cover it with something so it is your way or he has to dig a new hole to get out. Been lucky so far this year and have not seen a single ground hog but then maybe the high water back in Dec. may have gotten rid or them at least for a while

The last one I got, about a month ago, it was about the third day before I got him. You need to check around because they normally have a couple holes and plug them or set your other trap there.
I have never had much luck getting them to go into a live trap. Although I've got seven coons so far this year that walked into a live trap for their last ear of corn.
I don't have a dog, just some wild cats. They never mess with the conibear traps. Although I don't place a high value on them as I would a family pet which we don't really have right now.

Make sure and wear latex gloves. Your hands will carry your scent onto the trap. I also think if your a mechanic the oil/grease smell is stronger too. I have had trouble with even mice not getting into traps I set. I started wearing latex gloves while baiting them and have had much better luck. Your groundhog can smell better than we can and you also disturbed his hole. He knows it better than you do.

I have not had much luck trapping ground hogs at their hole. They seem to move or dig another hole if you disturbed their main hole. Older fellow told me to completely cover the hole back up if your going to try trapping them in there. He says they will re-dig the hole over using a disturbed hole. I have not tried it. I have had much better luck baiting them around their hole. Cantaloupe seems to work best for bait. I use live traps for that.
