ALLIS CHAMBER 190XT

The mechanical engagement pto's have a coupler. When you move the
lever to the left of the seat it slides the coupler onto the pto shaft
hence making it spin.
You might have a hydraulic controlled pto. The lever should be beside
the right hand side of the seat. When you move that lever it engages a
clutch pack hydraulically (with hydraulic pressure).

The 190's have an live PTO not an independent so I believe it has the coupler system.

The 190's have an live PTO not an independent so I believe it has the coupler system.

Independent PTO was an option on those tractors. That's why he mentioned the different lever positions. live was on the floor, independent on the side of the console.
 
Some of them had a small PTO drive gear. Owners that used them to power PTO combines would grab that lever and throw it into stop when they saw a slug going into the feeder. The backlash would take out the PTO drive gear.

Never even heard of independent on the 190XT's and tractordata lists it as live too.

Hydraulic actuated pto was an option, where you can engage and disengage the pto without using the foot clutch. The pto was not independent because if you push in the foot clutch the pto will stop....but was "live" because you could stop motion of the tractor and still keep the pto running by putting the power director in neutral. I suspect the OP has the hydraulic actuator and it has some bad seals in it or a hydraulic pressure problem.
 
Is your pto shift lever on the left or on the right? Left is mechanical engage and right is hydraulic. No Ujoint in the system, but there is a shift coupler.
