Woodchuck Trap Is Set.

Conibear 220 trap is set. I just set one trap at this point, but I bought two. I understand they're most active around around sunrise/sunset. I didn't sprinkle any bait. Learning curve here.

Good luck. The only thing I've found to be effective against woodchucks is a 12 gauge, although I did nail one with a Dan Wesson .357 Magnum once.

I think you'll find they're effective, Glenn, just be REAL sure no non-target animals are around the vicinity--a Conibear of that size is no toy--they can break fingers or other bones in a heartbeat, and can be instantly lethal to anything that investigates a woodchuck hole, which many animals, tame or wild, will do besides woodchucks. I use apple chunks for woodchuck bait, though muskmelon or cantaloupe are also effective. Also make sure you've got all holes covered--they rarely have just one. Let us know how you make out!

I usually use .22 hollow point long rifle, but sometimes I use a 12-gage with 00 buckshot. A few years ago I got two with one shot using the 00 buck.

Yeah, you have to stake them down. My experience has not been that the animal drags it off but I have had turkey vultures take the animal and my trap so, now I stake them down or tie to a cement block.

I use a have a heart trap and haul them away. I worked at an Army base and a black civilian guard wanted to know what I was going to do with it. He wanted to eat it, so I gave them to him if he was on duty. Houses are too to close to shoot them. Hal

Leg hold trap would be just as effective. Setting a 220 above the water level is illegal in most states. The conibear trap will also indiscriminately kill domestic pets and hurt children. In no way am I anti trapping...Been doing it for better than 50 years. But you do need to be responsible. JMHO.

A 22 hollow point won't phase a woodchuck with a body shot. BTDT ! When the dog had one "treed" in a car I had for sale by the road.

Got one digging at the corner of our house also. We set a trap yesterday. Pic is what we found this morning. It got out of the trap. Will fill in the hole and see if it returns. Next time there will be 3 traps there, if it does.

Shot one with a 30.06 a short time back. At least I think I hit it. Never found much evidence. And my mother-in-law is still mad at me. It was at the opposite end of the garden from her house, and I did not tell her I was going to shoot.

If those are the Double-Spring Conibear traps, about 11" Square...you don't need "Bait"..

Just spread the trigger wires apart so the Hog thinks he can sneak through the trap..

I just place the trap over the hole they are using..maybe place a few stones around to support the trap and lay a couple on top of the springs to hold it in place..

I aught one that was so large he had Backed into the trap and would never have fit through the trap..and it was Plenty alive when I pulled it out of it's hole...but the
trap held him for sure..it is the only one I have found alive with Conibear's..

Have baited with a few inch-square pieces of lettuce leading to trap, and then several pieces in/on trap. Then also have left "victim" in trap for awhile. Baby chucks or other Chucks start to investigate and make real good target shooting activity.

depends on the ammo used. .22 lr will kill out to 50 yards with Fiochi (sp) hollow points to vital body areas while Winchester Western only irritates them. Difference is in the powder content.

How much wood would a Woodchuck chuck . . . Well, put 'em to work and find out. Cheap Labor.
