John Deere 5410 won't start

My John Deere 5410 won't start. I was in the field cutting hay and all the dash lights went out. When I shut my tractor off the dash lights would not come on and the tractor wouldn't start. I messed around with the fuses and then the dash lights came on and the engine started. I went back out in the field to cut more hay and the tach and dash lights quit working. When I shut the tractor off, it wouldn't start again. I monkeyed with all the fuses again, but it still wouldn't start.

Ignition switch?
Computer chip somewhere?

Let me know if you have any ideas!

Thanks,
Charlie

Clean/tighten all 4 battery cable ends. Check again for a blown fuse. JD 5000 series tractors have a long history of cold start sensor in coolant neck on cyl head shorting out then blowing fuse. I'd suggest to try starting with sensor disconnected.

even if the cold start sensor is blown would it make the tach and all the dash lights go out? I'll try what you have suggested and let you know, thanks, Charlie

Check the power supply wire that comes back off the starter terminal. I have had that break twice on my JD 5210. When it does then you do not have any power to the dash and ignition switch.

The cold start sensor will blow the fuse,, it will run after you unplug the sensor and replace the fuse..It will run okay till you get a sensor RE503242 $56.

I have had them "grow" some resistance on the blades of the fuses. If the fuses "look" ok, check for power across the fuse with a voltmeter. I agree that the cold start sensor will blow the fuse as well but have seen this situation several times, more so on the later tractors when the fuses were moved from under the steering column to behind your left heel where even more water, mud and crap could find them.

No but a bad battery cable connection could cause tach & dash lights not to operate or possibly bad dash cluster ground connection.
Well I checked all the battery connections (no easy task) and it still didn't work. I put some dielectric grease on all the fuse spades and the ignition switch spades. I tried the switch and everything came on and the tractor started. Woo hoo!!! By the time I got out to the field everything was dead again. I got my field cut but now it won't start again. Seems like something may be loose. I haven't checked the dash ground, didn't see it in my messing around but wasn't looking either. There is a ground on the ignition switch, seemed ok.

thanks Tech 7, but no blown fuses. I think something is loose somewhere because every time I mess with it eventually the dash will come to life when I turn the switch on and it starts. I'm gonna see if I can find the dash ground like Jim said
