I don't really go to the JD forum so I'm hoping someone sees this here. Lots are "in the know" about these tractors.
On the 4440 there is a block off plate right below the injection pump. If it were a gas engine it would be the size that a fuel pump would bolt to - an oval plate with two studs and nuts on either end. It's leaking oil there. Not a gusher, but enough drops to make everything stick.
I asked JD and they said it mattered which pump I have. I took a picture of the pump (Bosch) and showed it to them. That was when he told me that seal had been discontinued and I would have to make one. That just can't be. Not with the thousands of 4440's there are running everyday and all of the places they used that 466.
He also said, "Oh, that's all spring loaded under there so don't let anything fly out when you take that little plate off to make your gasket." I'm doubting that - I can't think of anything that would be sprung right there in that engine. I think it was them trying to get me out to the car so they didn't have to tell me about a $1.95 gasket.
By the way - you know that donut size rubber ring that keeps the light bulb in the holder on the rear work lights? $60. It's the same one on my IH 886. Maybe I'll see what that dealer wants for it.
