480 case tractor starter question

I just bought a 480 case tractor, no backhoe on it. Anyway the starter all of a sudden started making a grinding noise. Took it off and the metal collar that the starter gear rests against was now in front of the starter gear (the gear tore through the center of it) and is now in the way of the gear preventing contact with starter gear to flywheel. I believe it's a 10 tooth starter, anyway how hard would it be to just take it apart and weld up around that collar where the gear went through it and put it back where it's supposed to be or insert a washer the correct size in its place? Any help ugh appreciated, I would hate to buy a new $300 starter. Thanks. I'm trying to post a picture of what I'm saying but don't know if it will work or not.

Before welding on it, take it to a starter repair shop. They will probably have the necessary parts, or may have a new/used nose piece if needed.

That's not a good area to be short cutting. Don't want to take a chance damaging the flywheel gear or having something fall into the bell housing.

Actually got it apart, gear isn't inside the collar, it's gone, somewhere inside my bell housing already. Sucks, don't think I can find just the gear assembly!
