How do I determine what type of alternator/amperage is on a 1988 Dodge Dakota 3.9 v6? Seemingly I can have a 90amp or a 120amp on
this vehicle. I am pretty sure I have a 120 but cannot be certain. The tag on the back is worn but it seems to read part no
7C150 or 7G150 or 70150. It is a Nippondenso but I do not feel a need to replace it with one just the right amperage. I believe
it has a MAPPS so I am pretty sure the wrong amperage will really bung things up. I am pretty sure the brushes are worn too
short, but I cannot find the square ones with springs anywhere. Also, the copper rings that the brushes contact are worn unevenly
and I cannot figure how to pull them from the shaft nor can I find replacements. They seem to be epoxied on.

Thanks in advance.

If there is an alternator/starter repair shop near you, they can look at it, tell what amperage it is. They can either repair it, or sell you a rebuilt or new one.

Another source of information, the dealer can probably tell what alternator it has from the VIN. With that info, you could get one from the auto supply.

OK according to what I can find you have a MAP sensor. Not sure what a MAPPS is and can't find one listed for the Dakota. Nothing comes up in a parts search for MAPPS.

If it has a pulley number you can ID #5227174 if for the alternator Chrysler part # R5233472 Chrysler reman part #. But
R5233672 is the only part number Chrysler actually list as going on an 87/88 Dakota with the 3.9 from Chrysler's site which is the other alternator it could be. http://starparts.chrysler.com/starlibrary/marketing/reman/Electric.pdf That number should cross to your local parts store.

Go to RockAuto.com, click on your application, go to the electrical section and then click on the genrators/alternators section.
While they are not always accurate, you can see pictures of each type of alternator they sell (in the photos mode, click on the arrow to see side, front and back views) and you can compare the photos to what you have on your truck.
Most brands sold have three or four photos of each alternator listed.

Rings can be trued up carefully on lathe . most napa stores should be able to get brushes. However a rebuilt unit may be best.

Years ago you could take a hand wire brush and brush around on the alternator housing and numbers would appear. The numbers then use to be electrically etched into the aluminum housings. Once the dirt is removed you can read the numbers. The numbers are made up by a lot of little dots. I would just go to O'Rieleys and get one that has a warranty. I wouldn't even attemp now days to try and fix one. But I guess if you have time! Did you have it tested?
