Oil for a 300 international utility

I'm new at dealing with old tractors. I bought a shop manual but it doesn't tell what type of oil to use in a 300. It says 5 quarts but no vicosities.any help would be great. Thanks

I'l bet most will say 15-40, I use 15-40 Delvac in our Farmall C, and it seems to like it. If its a fresh rebuild I might use
something lighter, but if it's a typical 300 15-40.

Thank you for responding so quick. I had bought straight weight non det.oil 30wt. I'll take it back and get the oil u recommend.thanks again. Randy

I have been using 15-40 in my 300 row crop for the last 4 years (since I got it, replaced one cylinder and piston that were rusted solid and began using it) and it has been
fine. I had a leak at the back of the oil pressure gauge that I thought was a hydraulic oil leak, but once I finally figured it out I have had no problems.

Many things depend on where you live. I'm in Missouri and I use 20W-50 year round in all my stuff but where I live it is not all that cold in the winter but if your up north you might want a 10W-40 or even a 5W-30

Most everyone here runs a 15W-40 Diesel oil year round.

Straight 30 is too thick for winter.

Operator manuals tell you what kind of oil, and where to put it, and drain it. Service (shop) manuals tell you how to fix it when you don"t put oil in it!

Trouble is that ops manuals are typically not updated as time passes and what was a SWELL oil 50 - 70 years ago is now out of date.

15-40 diesel oil will be just fine.

Back when that tractor was built, there were only poor oils available.

Today there are fanatastic HD oils available that will outperform any straight weight oil. Straight weight oil is usually the WORSE oil you can buy in terms of performance and protection. Use a 15w-40 hd oil or if your do a lot of snow plowing, upgrade to a 5w-40 solely for easier starting when very cold.

thanks a lot for the information. I ended up using a 10-30 weight.the only place I could find to pour the new oil back in was throuh the dip stick hole. Is there any place else to pour the oil in?thanks
