All day to fix a flat

I had a flat on the SC. A small hole was in the rim and it had been patched nearby. I guess moisture wicked in between patch and rim. I priced a new one and my cheap gene kicked in . Not too bad for stick welding.

I happen to live 20 milse from one of the places that build rims,I do not know why, but they charged me $25.00 for a new rim.(Super C) I drove fast and picked it up before they changed their mind.

I don't care what a new one cost, I would not want to be in the same township when someone airs that rim up. They have been known to decapitate people.

I'd have no issue standing right beside that rim as the tire was aired up. I say this because the bead wasn't compromised, only a small area in the center of the rim.

Given the look of repair, the looks of the rest of the rim (meaning it had limited corrosion) as well as the fact the tire runs a tube, I have yet to see why you'd be worried about it.

A cheap gene? I think I may have one or two of them.

Did you know diarrhea is hereditary?

Yep, it runs in your jeans.

Nice job of fixing the hole.

Here is my take on rims rusting. Look inside an air compressor tank and you will find rust. Compressed air gets hot, cold tank condenses the moisture, moisture causes rust.

Some tire places are now putting nitrogen in tires. Not sure why, could have something to do with moisture in the air.

Nitrogen has nothing to do with the moisture.

It's mostly a gimmick, but the scientific reason behind using nitrogen is that the nitrogen gas molecules (pure nitrogen atoms pair up into N2 molecules) are much larger than the other gases in normal air, and won't migrate through the rubber like smaller trace gases, even O2 (oxygen).

Nitrogen gas also expands and contracts much less with changes in temperature.

The thing is, regular old air is about 80% nitrogen to begin with. "Pure" nitrogen is only 95% or something like that.

I think in racing went to nitrogen because it follows the ideal gas laws, where air with moisture doesn't. Using nitrogen they can predict what the pressure will be when the tire heat up. Air is over 3/4 N.

Just because normal air is 80% nitrogen, it doesn't mean that nitrogen in your tires is a waste. It does have some merit in that it's much more stable, and when our van had tires filled with nitrogen, they never needed to be aired up over the 2 years before we put new tires on.

Now if your clean drinking water were contaminated with 15-20% cow manure, do you think you'd notice? Same thing applies. People don't think 20% is much, but in a different context, 20% is a lot.

I also think... the the lowered oxygen content slows down the oxygenation or deterioration on the tire/tube...So they remain softer and flexible longer. This has the benefit of reducing heat.. And heat reacts with oxygen and makes tires deteriorate faster. Old stiff tires will heat up and tear apart quickly upon being flexed.

So its a snowball effect and eliminating oxygen is a good thing in the life of a tire. I dont know that I can prove it, as it just my thinking. I have been wrong before, just ask my wife.

N2 molecules are larger than free air molecules so they leak slower.Even though the air we breath is 70% N2 the rest of the gases in it will cause it to leak faster.Dry N2 is all we used in acft.tires.Also N2 dosen't heat up as fast.
