Hey Jim, I just wondered if you could remember the amount of space between a cycle hold down and the cycle? I have a JD 300 twin knife that I just put new guards, hold downs, and sections in. I have the hold downs down to approximately less than 1/16". If I lift the sections up and down I have a little gap in other words.

Is there a spec on what the distance between the hold down and cycle/sections should be? Thanks a lot - Bob

It's been decades since I've even thought about a sickle cutter. IIRC hold downs should exert slight down pressure on sections. I remember wear plates are important as they keep sickle forward in guards.

On my New Holland, the spec is .005 to .025 between the section (sickle) and the hold down with the section laying flat on the guard. There is a similar spec. at the back edge of the sections on the New Holland.

Use a folded dollar bill for a feeler gauge. Should slip between guard and section, or between section and hold down. 1/16 is too much clearance!

Thanks for the replies. I was fairly certain it was a little high. I'm sure it's less than 1/16", but still more than .025. Just wanted a good place to start. I will use feeler gauges and make sure. I have the book, but not with me here and I was just thinking about it. Want to get to cutting tonight since we have a few days of sun ahead. Thanks again - Bob
