Spraying weeds

Planted a dry land pasture mix with oats for a cover crop. See that the weeds I have been battling with are moving in. Reading the label for 24d says it can spray on oats as long as it's not under seeded with a legume. Grass isn't considered a legume correct? That would be alfalfa, cow peas and such. Would like to spray it with some weed control especially to get vine weed. Won't be cutting it hay for at least another 45 days. Thanks for the input.

Consider cutting the oats for hay, clip short may stunt the weeds, the legumes you planted should be ready to cut before the weeds have a chance to head out. This is providing there is enough moisture to work with. Prevent weeds from forming seed heads is another way to control if you do not want to use chemicals

I haven't done a seeding in years, and I usually seeded in the fall, but in the situation where I seeded in the spring, I would cut it early, to get the weeds off, then the grass comes back better than the weeds and crowd them out. If you give the weeds 45 days they will all have dropped a new batch of seeds!

You can spray 24D on oats seeded with legumes IF the oats and weeds canopy the legumes AND you reduce the amount of 24D. Pop sprayed 24d for years with a broadjet sprayer using 55 gallon drums for spray tanks. 2 qts 24d per barrel for corn or unseeded oats, 1 1/2 qts 24D per barrel for seeded oats. Not recommended, but he got away with it. (most of the time) After a few years he switched to something called MCPA instead of 24D for legume seedings under oats.
