Deere 6500 sprayer

I have a Deere 6500 sprayer and it still has the X ford boom on it. The one side lift cylinder always seeped a little oil and the side developed a major leak towards the end of last season. Well Son and I took it apart awhile back to see if we could fix it. The seal was out of one and the other one had rubbed a hole in the side. They are one way cylinders and believe it or not the make a repair kit for them but you have to cut them apart and weld them back together. New cylinders are $431 apiece at Deere ------so we checked around and found ones at surplus center for $49.95. Only trouble is Deere has 9 in. stroke and new ones have a 10 in. So we changed the way they mount. Had to reduce new ones pin holes from 1 in. to 1/2 with bushings and spacers and make new mounting ears. Not to proud of my welds, but it was not a good place to weld...Tee

Big Tee: I hate to tell you this but the original JD cylinders are repairable without any cutting or welding. All you have to do is remove the hydraulic fitting in the side of the cylinder. Slide the ram to where the end is at the hole where you removed the fitting. Look down in the hole and you will see a snap ring in a grove that has another grove right beside it that is smaller. The snap ring is one of the round wire ones. All you do is take a screw driver and flip the snap ring into the lower grove. The ram will then pull out the end. Replace the seal rings and put the ram back in. Push it down and pop the snap ring back up into the top grove an your done.

There used to be several of the JD 6500 sprayers around here. I got to where I could change the seals in under an hour a side. with out removing the base from the machine. I just made stops to put on one cylinder to hold the boom up while I worked on the opposite one.

This style of one way cylinder is common on JD equipment. The most common being the header lift cylinders on combines.
