tractor brand diversificaton part 2

Part 2 (the almosts)So at one point the F-20 was being traded for a Ford 6000. Paperwork filled out and all ready to go when a neighbor stopped by to say if you get that 6000 you wont make it through planting season on the tranny. He had two failures on the same tractor. So that was halted. Next we are filling silo and needed more HP on the cutter and it was decided to trade a Massey 44 for a 4010. Well that didn't happen because an 85 Massey Ferguson could do the same work for less dollars and less fuel. So that's where the Massey 85 came in. And finally a second to last bid at a farm sale on a 706 because "it was way too cheap" my dad thought. I pleaded don't do it as it was a gas. And I believe that's when the 1850 Oliver became a reality since we "lost the 706" as he put it !!!

I find it interesting you thought a MF 85 could do the same work as a JD 4010. The fuel economy I will agree with but the MF85 was only 62 or 63 PTO horse power. The JD 4010 was 80-82 PTO HP. I can say for sure how the MF 85 held up as there were none around here. There were several MF 1085 and they seemed to have hydraulic and transmission issues. Mainly hydraulic problems.

I had a Ford 6000 Commander I ran for several years never had a problem with the trans,as a fellow I know that works on them says the operators are what gave those trans a bad name.
The 4010 would have been a huge step up over a MF 85.

I've been around MH & MF all my life, and agree with JD seller, no way the MF 85 will keep up power wise to a 4010. I have two 85s, gas and diesel, only chance would be tie them together..

MF did the same work as needed so power difference he probably should have been looking at a 3010, not 4010, sounds like dealer wanted to oversell.

With the extra HP can it make a chopper go through the field faster? Some times extra HP is just extra HP if the implement is already maxed out on capacity. I use a Farmall 350 on my 1100 mower - switching to a 656 won't make it go through the field any faster.
