Need advice re: John Deere 302A

I acquired a John Deere 301A tractor and need some advice on a couple of issues. What kind of hyd. oil do I use?? I intend to fully service the machine before I use it. I have a JD 820 which is similar and it has pre-filter metal screen which should be cleaned when changing hyd. filter. Does the 301A have a hyd. pre-filter screen? If so where and how do you remove it? The hyd. oil has water in it. What are the likely ways the water got into the oil?? Thank you for reading.

The transmission sump screen would be the same as your JD 820. Meaning a plug on the side of the transmission case that you take out and pull the screen out to clean. The water in the hydraulic oil is usually around the gear shift covers/boots if it sets out side much.

Correct hyd oil is Hy-gard or it's equivalent. As previously stated sump screen(parts key 15) is accessed on RH side. Oil will need changed several times to remove water. Water is very detrimental to brake pads & wet clutch linings

The nice folks at 1-800-522-7448 can set you up with the operator's and service manuals which contain the info which you seek. The parts book is free on the JD web site .
