JD 4020 miss

neighbor has a 4020 that has a occasional miss, when missing it puts out a lot of black smoke, is this an injector ????

I would check the valve lash. Propably do for a good going over?

A bad injector would typically cause WHITE smoke.

I wonder if there could be a speed advance issue with the IP?

Also, could anything be loose, sometimes restricting the intake air system?
