Antique Plow Bolt

At a recent "show and tell", a fellow brought in an old plow bolt like used to hold shovels on a single or double shovel cultivator. This was similar to a carriage bolt or a plow bolt but the nut was square with a loop forming sort of a wing on one side. I was the oldest in the group and identified it and told the group that this kind of nut allowed the nut to be loosened or tightened with a hammer or other striking tool. I recall seeing such a nut on several old plows but cannot find a picture or an example of such a nut. I think many of them has an odd pitch and thread type. I went on to tell them that some farmers and no farmhands had wrenches. This fell into dis-belief among the younger folks. Anybody have any photos or description?

I think this is the style your talking about. You also could tighten the bolt by sticking some thing in the loop to tighten the nut.

Many years ago, an old antique dealer near here had a tin tub full of new heel bolts as we call them.
Why I did not buy a bunch, I don't know.

You have the same perfect 20/20 rear vision that many of us have. When I go to big car shows or even the flea market I will pick something up and look it over and as I am doing that I think "should I add this to my BIG pile of crap at home"? Lost a lot of neat stuff but I did have it in my hands. Yesterday I bought a very nice Presto canner for my sister. Hey for $25.oo it is a very good deal. Going back to the bolt, I have bolts from a wheel barrow that I thought had a 16 thread. NOoooo it had a 14 thread. Bought new to complete the job.

Go back far enough, before there were standard thread pitches, and find that odd stuff!

Watching Lay Lenno, he was telling about one of his oldest pieces, a late 1700's steam engine. Every thing was custom made, no standards in effect then. Each piece was hand made to fit the next!
