Malking a sub soiler?

Hey all. Hope all is going well for you. I have an extra fast hitch tool bar and have decided to make a sub soiler. I am looking for suggestions from all of you as to what I will need. I can buy 2 sub soiler shanks with teeth for $75. I will be using this on either a Farmall 400D or a 450D. How deep should the sub soiler dig and how far apart should the shanks be? Is 2 to many for these tractors or not enough? As always I appreciate any and all insight!

Thanks,
Matt

one shank is plenty for that size tractor if you are planning on doing any deep ripping-8-15" in ground here will bring you to a stop right now with one shank with that small of a tractor
cnt

where were you a few years back? I had a nice IH fast hitch single shank subsoiler I couldn't hardly give away, a single shank will let an 830 Case know it's back there at 18 inches and is quite a bit more tractor than a 400/450

You will need to go 15 inches deep to go below the hardpan. You can forget two shanks with that tractor.

Spacing should be approximately twice the depth ,you need

18 or 20 inch depth to break the subsoil . Do not do it

wet weather ,wait for driest part of summer ,then the

ground will shatter. I have 2 subsoilers, one 3 pt

hitch and one on large steel wheels.

I intend to subsoil in august once the wheat comes off. I have a few low spots that the wheat drowned out. Hoping that by breaking up the hard pan in the low areas that it will drain better.

So 1 shank it is. As to where I was...well if it was between 2010 and 2014 I was mostly in Texas and Afghanistan.

I guess I am not used to haring my tractors are small lol. I know they are in comparison to what is out there today but I was tickled pink to be able to plow with a 4-14 plow! If need be I do have access to a 706 that is fast hitch. So I guess if my old girls can't pull 1 shank at 18" I will go borrow the 706 from the neighbor.

Thanks All for the input!

Matt

I might have been able to get it to Texas but Afghanistan might have been a problem! IH pull types are not real hard to find. You might look at taking the 2 point hardware off of a row crop cultivator and adapting a shank to it. I have seen people use a plow shank. Tillage radishes go down to the subsoil. Their other value is bringing up nutrients from the subsoil and making them available in the top soil.

I have a fast hitch tool bar from an old cultivator. It came with one of the tractors years ago. The 450 gas I think. I just never got rid of it simply because it was fast hitch and they don't make it anymore lol. I think I will try and do both radishes and subsoil. Interesting...learn something new everyday!

Soil types will make all the difference in the world. I have a one shank for an 8N Ford that will run at about 18" in my soil conditions just fine. Don't think it would do that in clay based soil though.
