long arc sparkplugs

Sorry guys
I forget
what is the problem when you pull plug wire off and long arc it and it starts firing with a long arc?
Thanks for any ideas

A plug can have carbon fouling that will create an electrically conductive path from the center electrode down the outside of the insulator and to the shell. This fouling prevents sparking across the electrode gap to the ground and thus fails to ignite the fuel. The extreme gap caused by the pulling of the wire, causes the coil vltage to go way up (maybe 25 to 30K volts) this increased voltage flashes across the spark gap due to its intensity. Thus the cylinder fires. Jim

I don't know what your working on but,

On a Dodge I worked on the cap was bad.

On a VW the cap was bad and that helped but it also ran better with new wires.

fouled plug are contaminated plug.. Normal spark takes the path of least resistance (What ever has fouled the plug to ground) What you are doing is increasing the spark out put voltage (KV) The excessive voltage will jump the gap and fire the air/fuel mixture.
The excessive voltage has the strength to jump past the insulator (what ever has fouled the plug)...

Am I remembering correctly that there was a device that plugged between the sparkplug and sparkplug wire that did this? Maybe it was a sparkplug that had it inside it. Anyway, it was for the oil guzzlers that was always fouling plugs.

Hello Peteall,

Bad plug, electrode is shorted to ground. Take a vom and check for any resistance between the wire end of the plug and the metal part of the plug. Should not bee any reading....

GUIDO.

I have one of those devices, has a spark gap inside. Got it at Rough and Tumble (Kinzers,PA) a long time ago. Plug it in between the coil and distributor, so it works for all spark plugs. Was being demoed on a V-8 with fouled plugs. "See how it makes the engine run so much better". Kind of like an old fashioned snake-oil salesman.

The new generation JD gas engines with that floodomatic carb, came stock with plugs that had an additional spark gap up in the insulator. You can identify them by looking for the small hole in the top terminal. The hole was to vent ozone gas from that internal spark gap. I believe also a company called ALDOR ?? had a wide internal spark gap cold that closed up as the engine and plug warmed up. Claimed they would fire in oil.

Still have one of them too.Bought it at the Franklin County Fair when I was about 12 years old.I'm 74 now.

Treats the symptoms rather than cures the cause.
New plugs, solid core wires, heavier straight weight low ash oil , run the coolant at 195F and lean out the mixture. Plug fouling will be much reduced or eliminated.
