Harley Davidson

I have an older friend with a 1948 Harley Davidson FL. The original hydraulic lifters were replaced with solid lifters many years ago. He wants to set the valve clearance. The only thing I can find is .008 for the intake and .006 for the exhaust. Does that sound right?

any motorcycle i have worked on, the exhaust was always looser than the intake because they are hotter.

A hydraulic cam has no clearance ramps in its design. This is a few degrees of cam angle that take up the clearance designed into the cam for "lash" I would adjust them hot with .010" and if it was noisy I would tighten them a few and leave it as is. Jim

Jim,

I'll second your comments. You are quite right about that. (But you knew that....:~)

You will set them like a Sportster service manual would say. Until they spin freely with no lash [ on the base of the cam for each pushrod].

Dr Sportster is correct on adjustment, no feeler needed. When you have time, look at: www.hydra-glide.com. An excellent site for old harley owners, it is like YT except for bikes. In the Documentation section are many service manuals and other info very useful for home repair. Www.Harleytechtalk.org is very good also but more towards the newer bikes. For those that are wondering the hydraulic lifters in those years were part of the pushrod at the top, not the bottom, they starved for oil, most were changed to solid lifters.
