Sunflower planting

I want to put in a few small areas of sunflowers. For looks and critters, not as a crop.

When and how can I easily plant them? I assume the planting time is similar to corn and beans
and the depth is 1 to 2 inches. I plan to disc some areas, broadcast a few seeds and then drag them in.
Will this work?

Also, could I add some millet to the mix?

I'll be interested in your input. Thanks

We plant some for similar reasons. The goldfinches just love it. In central Alabama planting time is now. Could probably stretch it until middle of June and still get flowers. I just disc up the area and broadcast black oil seeds borrowed from the bird feed bag, cover with the disc or a small drag harrow.

Split the field with millet and sunflower but do not mix the tow. The sunflower will choke out the millet. Sunflower as the other poster has said is pretty easy to plant and grow. I sometimes use the planter and put them in rows but broadcast will work for you. Nice if you had something to roll them lightly with after you scatter them. I use a double row cultipacker and get good stands.

I plant about a 1/2 acre of sunflowers for the critters every year. Just buy some bird food sunflower seed and put them in the corn planter.

sunflowers are pretty easy. go to grocery store and buy bird seed sunflowers, not the mix. plant with grain drill, broadcast, or corn planter set to closest spacing. if you use the corn planter you can cultivate for weeds.
