A friend of mine was mentioning that he was looking at unfamiliar branded mowers at a local big box store and saw a Poulan mower. I thought he was not seeing it right, looks like I'm the wrong one here.

A couple of years back many o the large machines were AYP. They are tougher than the mtd machines and well worth the extra bucks. Saw a Polane last year and it was an AYP and also the big Sears machines. When you get into those big 22+hp and 46 -54 inch machines many are AYP. Just make sure you get a BRIGGS engine and not the Kohler. Briggs is far better engine.

I totally agree with you untill you got to the engine. Briggs makes several grades of engine, some are pretty sorry. One exception is the Briggs and Stratton Vangard which is actually made by Mitsubiti in Japan. It is a very good engine and expensive.

I've been taking care of a property of a deceased relative.
About a 5 year old (roughly) Poulan Pro mower is there.
Decent little lawn tractor, mows nice. ( nice looking and comfy too)
Would I ask work of it like I do from my 60's-70's Wheel Horse tractors? not a chance. But, it is a good little mower.

Just so the facts and names are straight (copied from a posting by Sergeant at another forum in 2010 but the info is up to date still):

Here we go... Roper was Bought By Electrolux in 1988, it became American Yard Products (AYP). Electrolux also bought Husqvarna in 1978 . AYP was moved from IL to South Carolina (Sears had owned a portion of Roper the controlling interest, Roper had made most of the Sears Suburbans and Craftsman Tractors). So both Husqvarna and Craftsman Tractors where made at the AYP plant in SC. In 2006 (in 1986 Electrolux bought Poulan Pro & Weed eater) Electrolux spun off its outdoor power equipment under Husqvarna and made it its own company So Husqvarna is now the parent company of AYP which is still around. So certain Craftsman GT & lawn tractors are made at the same plant where Husqvarna, Poulan Pro, Weed Eater and Dixon Lawn and Garden tractors are made (Dixon was bought by Husqvarna in the last few years). Currently some Craftsman and Craftsman Professional series are now made by MTD as well as Husqvarna/AYP.

Husqvarna owns several brands:

Husqvarna
Gardena
McCulloch
PoulanPro
WeedEater
Flymo
Jonsered
Klippo
Diamant Boart
RedMax

Believe it or not I knew that. My wife works for a Husqvarna dealer. I just bought a Husqvarna zero turn on Monday, Z 248 F. Has a Briggs Vanguard 23 HP V twin and I opted for the "fabricated" deck rather than the stamped steel one. The F stands for fabricated. That means it's made of plate and welded rather than stamped. Darn things are more expensive than the lawn tractors.
