Yes. Sassafras tea is made from the roots.

The leaves can be spectacularly red in the fall.

My Grandfather use to make it, I think he pealed the roots and boiled them, had a great smell...

Smells like root beer. Limited consuption is okay. It contains safrole which is Carcinogenic in large quantities. Sassafras wood is excellent for smoking (not the roots)

Used to make it as a kid. We would chop a few small roots and wash them off. Mom or grandmother would boil them and make tea. Very good.

For tea we would wash the roots, cut to fit in the pot of water. Boil till it's as see thru as lipton tea would be when it's done. Add sugar untill it suits you.

I have some Sassafras that I would like to have someone dig up and remove. Any takers? Leave my email open. George

Just don't puff on the same end you lit. Friends family has been smoking with Sassafras for several generations. Let the drippings fall into a pan of beans... mmmm!

"Root Beer", made from the root of sassafras. Didn't know there was a carcinogenic in it.

We would dig the root, dry it, then boil it to make sassafras tea.

My grandmother would ask me to get some sassafras roots in the spring,
about March, and bring them in to dry. Then boil them in water to make the
tea. She said it was to thin the blood after winter. How do you identify
sassafras plants? I learned at the age of 14. Break a twig off of the
plant, and if it smells like a barrel of apples, you have it. Do you
remember when apples came in barrels. Our schools used to get barrels of
apples supplied by the government. Yes, I will admit to being over 40.

We dug up small roots and washed them and scraped the outer covering off root and dried it and then make a tea from it latter. At one time you cold buy it in store but can't any more because it does thin blood and drinking to much of it can thin you blood to much. The last I heard they made an artificial Sassafras to make tea.

As all have said roots is how you make the tea. The tree has 4 leaves. Left Thumb, Right Thumb, Double Thumb, and No Thumb. Twigs smell like Fruit Loops. Suppose to be able to burn it green it has a lot of oil in it.

I haven't done it for a number of years, but we use to make tea every spring, and drink it for several months. The old saying was you could make tea in any month that had the letter "R" in it.

So I missed out as it is now May.

We usually found a smallish tree, hooked the tractor to it and pulled it out roots and all.

Many times i remember seeing my dad come in from disking or plowing with a small sassafras tree tied to the implement.

We would wash the roots off with a water hose, cut of the main parts. Then cut the roots up in approx 2" sections and lay them out to dry off. We preferred to use root sections that were at least as big around as your thumb, to maybe as big in diameter as a C or D flashlight battery.

When we wanted tea, we took a small hatchet and just split the root up into small sections. The smaller you split them, the more surface area exposed to the water. We would put a pan of water on the stove, throw a handfull of split wood into the pan and bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer, and just let it simmer till the tea had a good reddish/brown color. Put in some sugar, dring it hot or cold.

I like it both ways. I really wanted to get some this year, I may still get some in a few days.
