Dodge Diesel

I have a 2004 Dodge Diesel that is sluggish. It eventually gets up to speed but slowly. It was diagnosed with a injector problem. I have not had an experience with injectors causing this symptom; fuel pumps and filters, yes, but not injectors. Today I filled up and put in an alleged injector cleaner additive. There was a noticeable improvement; not great but better. May I take this as proor that there is an injector issue?

More information would help. How was the injector problem diagnosed? Have you checked the boost pressures? Have you changed the fuel filter lately? How long has this been going on? All you have to do is get one bad tank of fuel and you can have the problem you are describing. A fuel filter is about $40 a new set of injectors is like $1800 so you need to be sure whats wrong.

My 99 24 valve acted that way. Finally took it and paid a guy $55 to put it on his computer. Bad MAP sensor. I didn't even know the diesel had a MAP sensor. He showed me where it was and told me how to replace it.

One think 99% of people that OWN a Diesel NEVER think about is WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU HAD THE VALVES ADJUSTED??????? Yes you NEED to adjust the valves it's not a car with hyd lifters. Kept telling my one friend that you need to run the valves , you need to run the valves and he kept telling me that you do not need to adjust the valves . Then he had a problem with a head gskt and wanted me to work on his truck . Nope i don't do cars . trucks , water leaks in cars and trucks and i don't do windows . Bad enough i work on my own when i have to and on those days don't even come around . Long story short he found a socalled Cummins GURU that said he could do it and when he got it back he was telling me how different it sounded and it had way more get up and go . Yep he had to adjust the valves when he put it back together . I do mine on my Dodge around 25000 miles or about every four years since i do not put many miles on it and more 6-7000 a year. and a little Lucas with each tank of fuel does not hurt . One more thing i would look at is the filter for alga and if this is the cause of low performance then ya need to start treating for that..

I have an 2003 that had similar symptoms and it had a bad lift pump. Put a new Air Dog on it and it ran like new.

Hello. JimS,

How about the air filter? Does it smoke? If it smokes what color? Hard to start cold? Fuel filter age? Last time the valves where adjusted? Give more info......

A friend had been having a lube shop do his service on an '02 Dodge Cummins and was experiencing poor performance and mileage ........ I asked him to check the air filter ..... he said it was fine and the lube shop had recently given it a clean bill of health. I went over to his place to see for myself ..... the side that you see when you access the air box was fine BUT the other side looked like it had been 'chipped and sealed' by the county road crew. He hadn't checked the intake side of the filter and neither had the lube monkeys ...... a new filter was installed and that brought back the smile to his face. 8)

You need to see what error codes the truck has set. Insert the key in the ignition and turn the key off and on 3 times, leave the key on after the 3rd time. Any error codes should show in place of the milage. If you have a problem with that, try your local auto parts store, most of the chains like O'Reillys, etc, will use a reader to give you the error codes. Keep us posted on how this progresses.

JimS are you using a premium grade diesel or truck stop/convience store diesel? there is a huge difference. I would run 2 or 3 tanks of fuel thru it with the injector cleaner and see if that clears it up. You can take it to a parts store and have the codes read, but then you need someone to with experience correctly interpret them. Good Luck with her.
