Looking at buying an r at an upcoming auction has an older restore not sure what was all done looks good from pictures what's it worth both motors run paint looks great also thanks for any info

R JD tractors are my favorite 2 Cyl JD. They are massive and pretty complex. They also are not very portable. Too heavy
for common trailering to shows. If you have a tillage need, they are strong and efficient on fuel. They are not nimble or
"handy". They sure make a statement. Jim

I do plan on using it for plowing and parades I have always been a fan of the r/80/820/and mostly the 830 my grandpa had one and dad used to tell me stories about pulling a 14'chistle plow. But I have no idea what it's really worth thinking top dollar at 6k but not sure what u think?

Grew up on R's, my favorite also. The price varies around the country...in my area 5k would be in the ballpark. You would want the pony to be in good shape, as repairs can be pricey. I have a '51 & '53...they will be here as long as me.

My R dynoes at 52 HP and 4X14's is darned near too much in my darker Iowa soils. 1st gear with the front end light sometimes in the fall but most of the time 2nd gear. I dynoed it with the PTO before I knew I shouldn't have but the PTO stood the strain.

Last time I checked which was about 10 years ago in my area of MN for what you describe anywhere between 6K and 8500 at auction. Haven't seen one on the block in over 8 years.

I remember my dad telling about the R's that the county used to grade roads in the 30's, he said you could here the put put, pause for miles.

R's came out in '49 so the county was ahead of time.

My favorite tractor also, got a 1950. PTO is the weak spot, check the pony for moisture in the oil. Sounds like deal if you could get it for 6K and everything is good. Mine will pull 4-14's in second just as deep as the plow will go but have talked to guys that have very hard ground and 3-16's is all they want.

I knew I should have bought the one for sale here a couple months ago for $2xxx

I cannot disagree with you, as I don't know your soil or the conditions there...But..we have some darned TOUGH soils here and I ha "R" drop out of 2nd with 4x16..and that includes a JD "A" chained to the back of the plow and that plow IN the ground...!!!

Mighty BIG Ponys it has if it only has 45 of them...

Dad plowed with a 4-14 for serval years behind his R with no problems at all. Then he got a 3-16. 4th gear about 3/4 throttle and it did a great job. The reason he switched was to get a trip beam plow because of some ground he was renting.

I don't know the value of the tractor but they were easy on fuel.My three uncles farmed together and bought a R in they thought 1949. They disced a quarter of ground with it. The fuel they used was recorded by there fuel man and it ended up the R burned two cents an acre. I suppose diesel only cost maybe 12 to 15 cents they couldn't remember for sure.
