South Dakota Prairie Dogs

Hello!

Does anyone have any? Or know anyone that does?

Planning a trip there in about a month with 2 friends. Would like to stay east of or near the river and off the Rez. I know I could pay a guide to put us on a town, but being a cattleman myself, I'd rather find a rancher who would like some exterminated. My email is open. Any leads would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

I have relatives east of there and having a 17HMR I would love to do that along with hunt some pheasants...

I can't help you out, but will tell you it's an absolute blast hunting them. When I went however, I too used my .17 and it wasn't the best choice. After 100 yards or so the strong winds were a definite factor. Also the instant knowing of "I got it" was lacking because some would return to their hole. I was starting to question myself and possibility of scope getting goofed to the point I walked out to check mounds and I did find blood. My buddy that lived where I was at used a .204 I believe he said and a .223......verrrry effective, fun as heck, and you can really reach out there and get them from a distance. I didn't want to give him his gun back! Lol. Also let me know it wasn't really me being that poor of a shot! Have fun, look for those hillsides with the sun hitting them, and bring LOTS of ammo!!!

not to highjack, but a group of us guys went out one year. Pretty darn fun. I threw .223's at them out of "sniper" AR! The 22-250 in the group was a tack driver, it was amazing. We brought our .22's also.

I haven't been out there for about 12 years, we used to go out around White River. I didn't have a .204 then, but used .222, .223, and .22-250 a lot. Watch so your rifle barrel doesn't get too hot, you can ruin a good rifle pretty fast. Take a lot of guns, and a lot of ammo, so you can trade off on guns and not ruin the barrels.
Have a great time and plug a few for me.

used to run cattle on the western slope of colorado. Amno was cheaper then, used a 243. Fun to watch scope turn green when shooting around young tender grass. When full they explode.

You should try it with a 22 /250. Hit a full ground hog with that baby. Alfalfa and ground hog all over the place.

I just discovered that caliber Sunday at Scheel's. Looked neat. Salesmen said it was a nail driver charge cartridge.

Had a friend that went out to one of the western states and shot prairie dogs. He used a Ruger 223 and took a case of ammo with but said the rancher that let them on his ranch paid for their ammo just to get rid of prairie dog.

I've never hunted over a dogtown, and would love to try it sometime. Here in north Tx I've been on several coyote call hunts. The target is much larger, and I've seen guys connect way out there! I've used a swift, a 223, and a 6.5x55. Was on one hunt where a guy was using his 300 Win Mag, no one doubted when he connected on a yote. We learned to carry a 12 ga with OOB, cause you'd be calling looking over a field and look around and see one sneaking up on you at bayonet range!
Good luck and be safe!
