It was created so that you could move a crawler tractor on the highway without having to load it on a trailer. Once at the work site, the wheels are removed and the machine is a conventional crawler.

As small as a lot of fields are in Europe, it makes sense that there would be quite a bit of road travel from field to field or vineyard to vineyard
 
Yes indeed and not surprisingly the idea never really caught on. The front wheel was merely a caster, to steer it you used the levers that would normally be used to disengage the tracks, so I can imagine the steering wouldn't be very precise to say the least! I wonder how you raised the tractor off the ground to remove/ replace the wheels? Carry a jack with you? run it up on a couple of railway sleepers?
The one in the photo is a 1C , they also made a bigger version called The 5C.
 
YUCK! What an abortion. Guess that's what results when you mate a Crawler with a Wheel Tractor. Not nice to mess with Mother Nature, even mechanically.
