Propane tank (old topic)

There was some discussion on here when I posted about selling a 1000 gallon propane tank. For a further update I sold it Saturday for $800 with 37% full of gas. I'm not sure if it came up in original post but a dealer offered me $400 then later upped it to $500. this is just a fyi.

I would say they got a pretty good buy at $800. Dealer was obviously wanting to double their money, and I suppose they cannot be blamed, but you can do better selling to an individual. A few years ago I
paid $400 for a 500 gallon tank that was dry. Then found out it was missing the data tag, and had problems getting it filled, but finally found a dealer willing to fill it.

More to it than that, by law those tanks are not dot certified so can't be transported with more than 5% in them. So dealer has to transfer propane to truck then more tank. An added expense in time and travel. I bet Joe farmer who paid $800 is going to load it up and fly by noght. So I don't think the dealer was going to make a fast buck really.

gas company just picked up my mothers 500 gallon tank with a one ton truck and a lift at 70 percent gas. picked it up set on the truck bed threw two straps over it and off they went

I wouldn't bet on that. A lot of the dealers don't follow the rules any better than some of the rest of us.

My dealer picked up a 1000 for me 80% full by the handles where it is stamped "empty only" with his 1 ton with a boom. You talk about make the 1 ton squat. I stood behind a barn when he did it. I knew the 5% law, but dealer said it was to much hassle to pump it out. Said he does this all the time.

Oh I'm not saying it isn't done, it is a huge hassle to transfer, but I think that to imply the dealer was going to double his money at that price was bs. And wow I wouldn't even think of using the lift tabs on a full tank, definitely need to be strapped.

Its the fellows tank, he should know!! Why do so many on this forum pick on every word a guy post?? If you would take the time to compare windows chimney etc it clearly looks to be 1000. Even the tag has 1000 gal!!!
