OT - Ford 2WD Twin I-Beam frame crack

On an old Ford F150 farm truck I am fixing up. It has the 2WD twin I beam front suspension. On the drivers side there is a hole in the motor support cross-member that allows access to the oil filter. On this truck, there is a crack on the cross-member itself on the front side of this hole. Separated around 3/32in. No crack on the back side.

2 questions -

How common is it to see a crack here.

What would be the best way to repair it to not further weaken the support and insure it does not crack further. Should it be welded along the crack, or perhaps a strap welded across the crack? Other ideas?

I haven't heard of that happening, but haven't been in the automotive business for a while. Possibly the truck has had frame work done, something stressed it. Might get a helper to rock the steering wheel back and forth, (with weight on the front wheels), look for movement, frame twisting, etc. Make sure nothing else is loose.

The best repair would be to strap it, weld on each side of the crack. But you do what you can depending on how well the area can be accessed.

Its not common. If I recall correctly that cross member is riveted into place so the only way to correctly fix it is to grind the rivets off and bolt it back in place - or pull the engine. If you remove it I would look for a salvage cross member to put back in. I'm not a big fan of welding on those frame pieces and an undamaged cross member will let you know if your frame is sprung - it cracked for some reason.

I've owned 3 of those twin-I-beam Fords, and serviced quite a few more. I've never seen one with a hole in the cross member for accessing the oil filter, or the drain plug.

Well, Rusty, here is the pic. There is the filter hole, bigger than Dallas...

If you look closely you will see the crack going up the frame about 3/4 of the way to the other side. This is on a 1991 Ford F150 with the 5.0 EFI engine, 2WD.

Is the radiator cross member intact. I have seen one cracked like that and the front frame rail under the radiator support was MIA...
