hooked up 5 ft. rotary cutter today, used up my stock of 3 shear bolts & not done yet! first was high grass- stopped for gear change, got off clutch too fast, too much rpm. second, junk rubber, third was sand rock where it wasn't suppose to be. [It is known fact that rocks grow feet in winter & walk 10 ft. to different location] only mowing 5 acres, got about half. pick up half dozen tomorrow & try again after this rain I was trying to beat, & be more careful.

I did a fair amount of damage to my discbine once when I hit a rock that moved. This one was dead center in a section of an hourglass shaped field. I had been haying this field for a number of years so I knew right where the rock was. I would lift the mower on the last pass and go over it. Well this time I was two passes away from the center and hit it. It turned out that the landowner had moved his fence twenty feet into the field in order to enlarge his lawn. This effectively moved the rock closer to that side.

you guys are right about slip clutch. I have a shaft/clutch assy. that is for spline shaft. gonna see if end plate can be switched to round. also, seems like these shear so much easier than they used to. notice the shaft/yoke holes have become extra sharp on edge. think I might try putting a countersink on them with die grinder.

Just my opinion, but counter sinking the holes would make the bolt shear easier. I may be all wet but counter sinking or rounding of the edge will cause a bend in a small section of the bolt prior to the bolt failure. This weakens the section of the bolt carrying the load which will cause easier failure. This oppossed to the sharp edged hole deforming the whole cross section of the bolt at once, a shear!

My favorite thing is to see a large rock in the next round, and by the time I come back I forget about the rock, and mow right over it. Stan

I agree in affect he will have LESS bolt to do the work, counter sinking will make it more prone to shearing , however don,t think anything will matter. When it hits something the bolt will shear. Have a lot of customers that got tired of the grade 5 and slipped a grad 8 in there then sheared the gear box..LOl
