Most of us just retain the 6 Volt solenoid, and get by with it.

With normal use the "duty cycle" is so short the solenoid doesn't heat up significantly on 12 Volts.

Of course, if there solenoid needs to be replaced (or when it does) get a 12 Volt replacement.
 
A 6 volt solenoid work just fine on 6 volts or 12 volts they do not care which it is. But some 12 volt solenoids do not work on 6 volts but that is few and far between
 
A 6 volt solenoid will work just fine on 12 volts it does not matter. But some 12 volt solenoids do not work on 6 volts. Matter of fact ALL my tractor that have solenoids on them have 6 volt solenoids on them and have had for decades
