Hiring a equipment contractor

A post further down has me wondering. Would hiring a contractor with a excavator be wiser than a bulldozer? The job would be mostly on a hillside clearing brush and terracing and also building a bit of a roadway.
And any idea of an hourly rate? I'm in upstate NY. Thank you
 
The contractor I get is just a small time operator and yet he has a Komatsu track hoe, a Case Industrial backhoe with front loader and a small John Deere bulldozer. He just brings whatever is appropriate for the job. Sometimes all three.
 
Older I get - the more I think: I should do what I'm good at (day job) and pay someone to do what they are good at (their day job).
 
I agree with Bill wisc. Hire a reputable contractor, and he will bring his choice of equipment, that will get the job done, with the least hassel.

Dozer if you have the room to work
Excavator if you are trying to save trees or working around objects.
Excavators eat up hourly $$$ fast

Dozer if you have the room to work
Excavator if you are trying to save trees or working around objects.
Excavators eat up hourly $$$ fast

Yes, excavators usually get more per hour than equivalent sized dozer, but they get more done in most situations.
 
Do as Bill in Wisconsin says. I did, he brought 2 dozers and a track hoe. Saved me quite a bit of cash by using all 3
