3020 24 to 12 conversion problems

Newbie here, I'm trying to put a 12 v system on my 3020 diesel, serial number 53019, I think it's a 1964 model. I went to the local starter repair shop and purchased a ND starter and one wire alternato. My problem is the starter won't fit with the fuel filter. The starter measures about 12. 5 inches, I only have about 11 tops. Has anyone else had this problem? Solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Gosh, a photo or 2 would help because according to my (possibly flawed) memory a 3020 diesel has the starter on the left hand side of the engine and the fuel filters on the RH side of the engine. NOT sure how they could tangle for space?

You could consider switching to this rectangular filter kit but JD's kit is too much $$$$$$.

Yes Bob, on an early 3020 the filters are ahead of the starter. Someone may be along to recommend the proper starter, I think an Iskra model works. Better posted in the John deere forum where guys that do this every day will see it.

Change it over to the latter style fuel filter like TXjim mentions below. You do not have to buy that overpriced kit. Go to a tractor or combine junk yard and get a used one off a combine or tractor. You might have to make a line or two but for less than $100 you will be in business with a filter that is better than what you have now. Be careful buying a smaller starter as many of the gear reduction starters that fit are junk. I had one on a 3020 about one year old and the nose cone broke off and wedged and ruined my ring gear(china made junk).I have heard of others with same issue. Tom

I got a starter from Tractor parts ASAP that fit. All 3020 diesels had the fuel filters ahead of the starter. I think Bob is thinking of the 3010, which did have them on the right side.

I called all states ag parts, he is trying to put me together a kit for 125.00, one question will this go in front of the starter also? Thanks in advance.

I LOVE this site!

We all learn some thing here!

While I've worked on a few 3020's over the years, they were in the minority around here compared to 4020's.

I've even replaced the starter on a diesel 3020, but don't remember the details because of the years that have passed.

Cant help you on the starter, but the "1 wire" Delco alternator is not a good fit for a "new generation" JD Your tractor does not come with an ammeter or voltmeter, only a Gen light. You should add an alternator repair plug kit from the auto parts store to your alternator, connecting the gen light wire to the #1 terminal(small white wire usually), on the regulator plug in your new alternator. Just tape up the heavy red wire in the plug(#2), as your "1 wire" alt does not need it, as it senses system voltage internally. If your" 1 wire" alternator ever fails, you can install a 3 wire alternator by adding a ring terminal to the #2 wire and attaching it to the big BAT stud so the 3 wire alternator can sense voltage externally. Remove the dash cover and remove the black plastic resistor in the gen light wire,( just unplug the resistor and plug the wires together) that will convert the formerly 24V gen light to 12V. With this done, your generator light will work as intended to indicate charge / no charge and will allow your "1 wire" alternator to excite at lower rpm, a real win win deal.

I got it running this evening, I went to Napa and bought a universal single fuel filter housing for 100. With new filter and fittings. I had to build a plate to mount it, but I had plenty of room for the big nd starter. Factory fuel gauge seems to be working, but I haven't figured out my lights yet. Thanks again for all info.

(quoted from post at 22:24:31 05/05/16) Factory fuel gauge seems to be working, but I haven't figured out my lights yet.

When changing from 24 V to 12 V if you attach both blue & brown wires in harness at starter to top post on solenoid lights should operate correctly.
