motor running rough

Hi, a while back I posted about my 26 hp briggs hesitating when you turn the key to start.Someone suggested to adjust valves. I did that and now it works perfect. They were not off by much. The motor recently started running rough and I thought it needed some carb work. I talked to my mechanic friend and he said do easy stuff first. Put in new plugs and a cup of methyl hydrate in a full tank of gas. 10 mins later runs like a champ! Sure pays to ask for suggestions. Thanks, Ed Will Oliver BC

Hi, I did the valves first and it started easy, then a few days later the rough running started. I changed the fuel filter with no change. Thats when I asked my friend for suggestions. Ed Will Oliver BC

So, more than likely the valves were not the issue, it was the last thing your did.

That is why it is important to only do one thing at a time.

ED, DONT LISTEN 2 NAYSAYERS...I, TOO, DID VALVES, JUST LIKE THEY TOLD U...SAME RESULTS, FIRST TIME IT HAS EVER STARTED RIGHT...NOW RUNNING LIKE ONE DEAD CYL, WILL DO AS U DID...WHERE DO I GET THAT CHEM???BE BLESSED, GRATEFUL, PREPARED...

NIK, I bought 1 litre at Nappa for $4.85 +tx. I put some in my 22hp tractor too. Its Methyl hydrate. I now remember I put some in my Chev 20 van when it was spluttering some years back. I must have got some gas with water in it. Ed Will. Oliver BC

David G. It looks like the valves were masking a fuel problem. The reason I say this is he said AFTER a valve adjustment, the engine ran good. Then it started to run bad again. THEN he did some stuff with the fuel. AFTER he did the fuel thing, once again it ran good. I think he did some distinct point by point trouble shooting and repairing as needed.

I recommend that you use the Methyl Hydrate sparingly. A little goes a long ways. That is the stuff they use in big trucks to thaw out frozen air brake lines. Powerful stuff.

There's nothing special about "methyl hydrate." It's just plain old METHANOL, the alcohol that top fuel dragsters use in their engines.

Many of your "mechanic in a bottle" type products have it as a main ingredient. So if you can't find "methyl hydrate" specifically, just pick up a can of Berryman's B12 Chemtool for $4 at any walmart or auto parts box store, and you'll have pretty much the same thing along with some other helpful solvents that'll flush your carb out clean as a whistle.
