I let my nephew disc a 10 acre field last week to get ready for corn ,.trouble is he did not finish ,WRONG so I finished it .tonite while I was at my county county council mtg .this kid coms over and has the hots to get his jollies tractor drivin ...WRONG ,.He tells My Sara that he is gonna finish discing,WRONG ,.she says ,, jim has it all done ,,.nephew says the field behind barn needs discing... WRONG , My sara says , NO , That field is ready for cows to graze off, and jim is about to run wire around it . nephew says to my SARA I told him all the fields needed discing ,,.. WRONG !!.he can be very convincing and conniving to get his way and my Sara Bought it WRONG .my cell phone was off because I am in a mtg ,and there is no record of a missed call or text,. this idiot nephew goes off in the 1070 , like,,. with his pants around his ankles ph---ng up my plans discing down good wheat that I wanted to feed to the cows...WRONG .. luky for me, MY Nephew HALFazt, backAZwrds everything ,, and after 45 minutes and half the field disced down he as usual quits,having got his jolly fix ,.the long list of WRONG finally went rite ,. after a challenging mtg ,on my way home, I call my wife and she tells me what the nephew just did ,..and what I did next was wrong in a lot of folx eyes ,,. I then called my nephew at 10 pm ,and asked him by what authority did he decide he should disc ??.. duhhh , is his answer,. and I dress him down like sargent Carter dressed down GOMER PYLE for his goof ups ... and you know what ,.. I will bet ,tomorrow , he will come by and act like nuthin was ever said ... like a hundred times before.., Yes ,he does this kind of stuf often ,, cut my bushes off when I asked him to trim them back , spraybomb painted my tractor the wrong color,i was not even planning to paint the tractor ,.and a weed eater in his hands means death to any of Saras flowers and plants... and worse the 30 yr old kid nephew is a drinker and chronic whopper teller ,at least he has no history of drug abuse . but . I cannot depend on him for anything , except to foul things up ,,. he wont listen ,has a mind of his own that wont steer,.. and tonite if I would a pulled in and seen him discing my grazing grass down I probably woulda chokt him ...don't know what to do ,. my brother and I are exasperated with his son , and it is far too late to correct him now,. I needed to vent ,.. thankyou ,, for any comments ,,. and I guess there are worse things he could be doing .. he is not the sharpest knife in the drawer ,and not nearly as ambitious as his forefathers in his bloodline ,to sum up ,he manages to find girlfriends easy enuf , but they don't keep him . he is street smart,gregarious ,holds a decent job , and knows just enuf to be dangerous and to get by..

Well sir I am sure you are a good guy BUT YOU ARE TO BLAME FOR ALL OF IT!!! AND ONLY YOU CAN FIX IT!! Court order for him not to be on land or operate your machinery. I have had to do this and hire some help equaled a lot less stress. Also I would send him a bill for the damage crop field (that will help get rid of him). Also you are to blame for letting this go on long as it has when you should have CUT HIM ADRIFT!!!
Google the symptoms of ADHD. Can't finish a job, has difficulty following ORAL instructions, alcohol/drug dependency, etc. I think you will find it will match him to a T.
Some things you can do, write down the instructions and leave room for him to make notes. You writing them down will allow you to make sure the points you consider important are recorded and leaving room for him to note the things he considers important. Try to teach him that when he is ready to leave the job to STOP, then look around for several minutes to make sure he is finished. A pocket notebook may help him, they are very subject to being ruined by sweat or rain, or just wear and tear in your pocket can ruin what is written in pencil, making notes in his phone may work better. Only he can curb his drinking, he needs to find something more important than alcohol to replace it with. A large number of people with ADHD also have depression, maybe watch him to see if this applies also.
Can't blame you one bit for being mad, it just builds up over time until something causes it to break. He will probably never have your abilities on the farm just like you will never have the abilities of Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Richard Petty.

Sounds to me like your nephew is just a few bricks shy of a load. Granted a few more trips out behind the woodshed while growing up may have helped the other issues but the plain hard fact is he didn't get to decide what smarts he got. As much as it grates my nerves sometimes I can't fault a man just cause he's a few bricks shy of a load. You already know you're stuck with him so you're going to have to try to limit the exposure/damage as best you can. He ain't gonna change cause for the most part he can't.
BTW - Whatever you do don't go around carrying a weapon. Temptation might get to great and you know you would regret it. lol

I would tend to agree that you are somewhat to blame here but a court order?!? That's a lot of nonsense. Maybe I should get a court to order my teen daughter to get out of bed earlier? Definitely lets clog up the court system with BS like that!
If you do not want him on the equipment, then leave someone in charge of the equipment when you are not there who can stop him. I would suspect, and without being mean, that you rely on his free or cheap labor to do a lot of work around your place. I know I do the same thing with my kids. Sounds like a need for better management and less complaining about the cheap help.

i have had some helpers like that at times- like one kid who wanted to disk with the narrow front 4010 (with duals). i told him to start at the top of the field and work his way back and forth, down slope, until he got to where it started to get sticky, and just leave the rest. what does he do? second time across, decides to go around the whole field and plants the thing in the mud on the lower side. kid goes across the driveway where we were plowing with the 966 and gets the driver to come to pull him out. 2nd driver tells me later, "i started to move him, and then couldn't go. i looked back and the kid had the 4010 wheels going in reverse!"

My oldest son was getting to the age where he could start driving so I taught him to run the disc. I showed him how to work up to wet spots and kept close watch for a couple days. First field I let him do alone he came to a low wet spot. He proceded to follow procedure perfectly going around it and working closer til it got too wet. Once that was done he headed out in the field a bit, turned around and headed straight through the middle of the swamp, cat tails and all. Must have hit it at 10mph because my 1370 case and 25' disc were setting almost perfectly centered on the swamp, water all around for more than 40' as 2-20' chains didn't reach out of the water. When I asked why he had no answer, still can't explain it today. Lol
